10 Things I Learned This Week--#57 (books, fitness, charities, Tebow, fun, tips)

Play The Cat/Dog Trivia Today:

The Innocence Project

After watching "The Wronged Man" on Lifetime this week, I found out I can help those wrongfully convicted through The Innocence Projcet.

For Your Protection

In an email from my cousin, I found out it's better to use wasp/hornet spray instead of pepper spray against an attacker because The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.

UPDATED 2/5/10 7:25 P.M. Better read the label first though--found this anonymous comment when I got home and thought I should include it here:
Don't Use WASP Spray!!! Read the label!!! It states it's a violation of Federal Law to use WASP spray other than to deter WASPS! It would be awful if you were sued or prosecuted by the FEDS for attempting to protect yourself with this product. Use pepper spray! Key chain pepper spray fires 10 feet and the larger canisters fire up to 25! Pepper spray is safe, natural, used by police and works on those which cannot feel pain (i.e. those under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol). Not a single WASP spray manufacturer will tell you to use their product in this fashion!!

Tim Tebow

Over at Word Journey I found an interesting post about Tim Tebow. Did you know the doctors advised his mother to abort him? Makes you wonder how all those other aborted babies would have turned out if they were given the chance to live, doesn't it? He's going to have an ad run during the Super Bowl so watch for it. Here's the link to the post: Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad Inspries. Here's a link to an opposing opinion: A Super Bowl Ad We Can Do Without. Which side are you on? Personally, I'd rather do without all those beer commercials.

My Secret Blog Giveaway

This week I went through all my comments during the past year on My Funny Dad, Harry blog to see who my top commenter is to determine the winner of my secret blog giveaway and discovered that Jude at Mature But Not Senile had the most with 20. Congrats, Jude! Hope you enjoy the book!

Fitness-Bones and Burning Calories

From my Biggest Loser calendar, this week I learned that strength training helps harden your bones. Any exercise that strengthens muscles also seems to slow the rate of bone loss. "We should lift weights in order to help us build as much muscle as possible to rev up our metabolism and maintain our bone density."--Jillian Michaels I MUST make time to workout on a regular basis.

This made me feel better: In A Closer Look At The Evidence by Richard & Tina Kleiss I read that
During intense concentration, your brain can burn as many calories as your muscles use during exercise. Intense thinking can be as physically exhausting as a physical workout. More than 100,000 chemical reactions per second can occur within your brain.
(from Letting God Create Your Day, Vol. 2, p. 59.) That must be why just sitting and reading is at least better than just sitting and watching TV. So my blogging buddies, use intense concentration when you wrote those posts and read others blogs and burn those calories!

FAST Forward

I finally discovered if I hit that Fast Forward button on my remote THREE TIMES while watching a taped show, it does actually zip FAST.

Childrens Books

This week I explored a Children's book series called Choose Your Own Adventure by Garth Stein. These are so good, I'm doing a whole post about them this coming Monday--be sure to look for it. If you can't wait, the website all about them is www.cyoa.com. These are so fun!

Flat Stanley

Thanks to the Sevin Family, I learned who Flat Stanley is and invited him over. I'm posting about this tomorrow night.

OH I love Biggest Loser tips. I even have the Wii game, I got it so I could yell at Jillian while working out, yeah until I realized that took air flow I was not getting lol.

Hi Karen, yea I had a post about the wasp spray here just a while back, sounds like it would work to me. I hope all is well with you two.

God bless,
Jodi

My kids were raving about Choose Your Own Adventure books just this week, it was fun to be able to tell them I used to read them when I was a kid.

Interesting about the wasp spray.

I made the same remote control discovery you did and I made my husband's day when I told him. Just a few hits to the middle button and we're through all the commercials! We used to press the >>> button, which was fast, but not AS fast, and we had to see the commercials. The other way you just skip on through. Love it!

I can't wait for tuesday! Two of my three kids are voracious readers...

This series may be perfect for my 10 yr old!!!

I got that same email about the wasp spray. It's interesting because my husband teaches woman's self defence. :)

I love Biggest Loser! Can't wait to be able to start working out again.

Have a great weekend!

Can't wait to see the Tim Tebow ad.

LOVE the Choose Your Adventure series. I remember it from when I was a kid and was recently happy to introduce my son to it.

My dd sent her Flat Stanley to my sister who was, at the time, a producer for an entertainment show. She took FS along to an interview with Will Ferrell. So we have a pic of dd's FS with Will!

Oh, we know Flat Stanley! He's quite the traveler!

I used to love the Choose Your Own Adventure books! So much fun!

I carry pepper spray, but I'm always worried about spraying myself instead of my attacker. I doubt they would care much in Mexico if I used wasp spray. They're more laid back here.

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

Matthew: Glad to mention you interesting posts here from time to time. Glad I gave you a good idea!

Wing Angel: That's funny how you yell at Jillian! She sure does push hard but I prefer her over Bob.

Jodi: I think I missed your wasp post, it seems I did come across one on a blog somewhere, maybe it was yours. I'd be too chicken to use it though, especially after reading the comment from Anonymous.

Mimbles: That's so cool!

Kathy: What a coincidenc!

Saudra: That's great your kids like to read. I bet they would like this series a lot. On the website for www.cyoa.com the author has the books grouped by age level as well as some other ways too.

RayeLee: What did your husband think of that wasp spray email? Did you see the comment by Anonymous? Makes me think twice about actually using the wasp spray. Love the Biggest Loser show.

Anonymous: I appreciate your insight and comment about this, whoever you are, and included your comment in the post as an update.

Benbes: Thanks!

Amy: I am looking forward to seeing the Tebow ad too--I hear it's in the first quarter so that's good.

So cool about sharing the CYOA books with your son. I think you'll find my Tuesday post about them quite interesting. Hope you stop back.

Wow, Flat Stanley is more popular than I thought! Guess I'm just out of the loop when it comes to kids culture, but reading the mommy blogs helps. I was blown away by one I came across this week actually ranking on Winnie the Pooh and his friends.

Daisy: You know Flat Stanley too? Did he come to your house?

gragationcancun: Don't know what happened, but your same comment was posted 7 times so I deleted 7 of them. I missed reading the CYOA books since I didn't read much as a kid and those weren't on the book report reading lists I had. I would imagine kids would like them though.

I don't carry pepper spray but suppose I should since I wait alone at the bus stop early mornings.

I never knew that strength training helps your bones too. That's pretty cool!

Karen, so much good information here I don't even know where to start. I love children's books and collect them so I'm off to find this series. The secret blog giveaways are so much fun and I'm glad you're doing one and what a great gift!!! Strength training I think is even more important to us older women because of our bones.
I don't carry pepper spray and I don't think I'd be quick enough with the hornet spray but I always have a german shepherd with me so maybe that helps.
Love the info in all these posts.

Karen & Gerard Zemek said...

Yaya: I was surprised too.

Mountain Woman: Another great children's series I discovered while doing tutoring is by Dale Greenburg: The Zack Files. These are funny!

I hope Jude likes my book--I figure anyone who comments a lot on "My Funny Dad, Harry" blog would probably like it.

I'm bummed that had had to stop with the strength training for my arms and chest because of the Cancer but hopefully, after about a year I'll be able to get back to it again. I do use my balance ball and Bosu ball and try to walk some every day.

I don't carry pepper spray or anything like that either. Just have my keys. I'd say with a German Shepherd by your side, you are safe. Abby, on the other hand would probably go right up to them and sit for them to pet her!

Thanks for all your comments!

The Tim Teebo commercial hype was dumb; it was a perfectly fine, no-big-deal commercial.

Love the idea of using wasp spray, but I'd hate to get arrested; that makes sense, I guess. If I were going to choose protection, though, I'd pic a gun, I think.

I really love your secret blog giveaway idea :)

Hope you're having a great weekend!
