In Honor of Memorial Weekend: Thoughts on Prayer by Major General Olson

This is a video of the Air Force Major General's speech at a National Day of Prayer event speaking of the importance of prayer in his life and how best to pray for the military.  He is a fantastic speaker and I enjoyed listening to him share prayer examples from his own life.  He relies on God daily and gives God praise for his accomplishments.

It is a shame that Mr. Mikey Weinstein, CEO of the civil-liberties group wants him court-martialed for speaking publicly about Jesus:  Military Hero Faces Court-Martial for Praising Jesus.  To me this is outrageous!

We thank all the servicemen, servicewomen and their families for the sacrifices made to protect our freedom and defend our country.  May God bless the USA and our nation return to Biblical values soon!

Thankful Thursday: Indians Swept Detroit and We Were There!

My husband and I were both off work yesterday and went to the Indians game, seeing them sweep the Tigers in 13 innings, winning 11-10 with a walk-off balk ending the game.  Never saw one end like that before!

Although the forecast was horrible:  Predicted Thunder storms for the morning and scattered thunder storms all afternoon, God answered my prayer for not having it rain on us or during the ballgame.  It was in the 70s and sunny!  Gorgeous day!

We had very good seats, free food as much as we wanted and a wonderful day in the middle of the week!  I did not over stuff, having 4 slices of the vege pizza, one of the cherry dessert pizza and five cups of ice cream.  What a treat it was.

Our pets were wondering where we were because their supper was later than usual, but fortunately they did not starve.  We went on a nice walk with Abby after she ate, enjoying the beautiful day, stretching our legs after sitting all afternoon.

A Prayer of Faith Heals the Sick

Since my lumpectomy, I have been taking Femara which is supposed to prevent the cancer from returning (so far so good).  However, it seems like this can bring on Osteoporosis which is weak bones.  My Oncologist has been scheduling me for bone density tests which show my bones are weaker than they should be.  She tells me they are more prone to fractures--even without falling.  I feel fine.  I can walk and run without pain (except when I was taking bone strengthening pills which I stopped).

I have another bone density test coming up next week on Thursday.  For those who may not know what a bone density test is, this is like the easiest test ever!  All I do is lay down for about 10-20 minutes.  There is no pain, no needles, no fasting or special drink required.  I am praying that God will reverse this and strengthen my bones so that I do not need to take two shots a year of Prolia which is now what my doctor is recommending.

The Fosomax and the other pill I tried resulted in excruciating pain in my legs and hips.  I could hardly walk and could not even do a jumping jack or bend over to feed the dog without pain.  I couldn't even sleep through the night because I'd wake up from pain in my legs and hips.  I felt like I was 90 years old.  These were pills I took once a week.  My doctor says none of her patients experienced the Prolia side effects and that it has helped them; however, the side effects are even worse than the ones from those pills.  With a shot, if I experience bad side effects, I can't just undo the shot which is good for six months!

My God can easily heal and I am putting my faith in Him.  Last night I asked that the church elders anoint me with oil and pray for my healing according to the instructions in James 5:14-15 which says:

If one of you is sick, he should call the church's elders.  The elders should pour oil on him in the name of the Lord and pray for him.  And the prayer that is said with faith will make the sick person well.  The Lord will heal him.  And if he has sinned, God will forgive him.

I love that God has given us such a clear course of action to take.  Seven elders (deacons) prayed for me last night.  Recently, I came across these verses in Proverbs 3:7-8 that I am encouraged by which say:

Don't depend on your own wisdom.  Respect the Lord and refuse to do wrong.  Then your body will be healthy.  And your bones will be strong.  (ICB)
I believe in God and in the power of prayer.  When I was diagnosed with breast cancer July of 2009, I called for the elders of the church to pray for me then too as well as many others, including some of my blogging buddies.  So, once again, I would appreciate all the prayer I can get if you believe in the power of God like I do.

Sunday Sharing: A Prayer For Those With Heavy Hearts

Last week was one of sadness for many people I know.  Several people I attend a Bible study with at church are going difficult family situations and I learned about five deaths of family members or pets of friends, co-workers of mine and blogging buddies.

On Tuesday, I began reading the book of Galatians and the first thing in Chapter 1 is a prayer that I prayed for those I know going through hard times or times of grief over their loss of loved ones.  I thought it was just what they need so I'd like to share it with you.  (Replace "you" with whomever you wish and pray this for those you know.)

I pray that God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace. --Galatians 1:3
This is how Paul opened his letter to the Galatians.  Later on, he called them stupid but I'll let you read that for yourself in chapter 3.

I'd love to hear what scripture highlight you came across this week and hope you will experience God's kindness and peace in your life this week!

Sunday Sharing: God Answered My Prayer In A Surprising Way

My scripture highlight this week is from I Peter 2:9 from Friday morning which says:

But you are God's chosen and special people.  You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation.  God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light.  Now you must tell all the wonderful things that He has done.  (Contemporary English Version)
The day before, God answered my prayer in a way I did not expect.  God is wonderful and after reading this verse the next day, I just have to tell you the wonderful thing He did for me recently.  Last Thursday, I forgot to pack bread in my lunch for my sardine sandwich. I noticed when I got to work and was getting out my snacks. I only had $3.00 with me and didn't really want to buy anything so prayed a quick prayer asking God to provide something for lunch for me. Sometimes leftovers from luncheons are put in the lunchroom for anyone who wants it or sometimes people bring stuff in to share. That's what I was hoping for.

It got to be 2:00 and no leftovers were brought in so I decided to try to find something cheap in the cafe downstairs. It was rainy so I didn't want to go outside for anything. The salads were $6, the pizza had strange toppings, sandwiches were well over $3.00,. There were no lines because I was the only customer at that time so talked to the chef who makes the sandwiches:

Me: Could I just buy two slices of bread please?

Chef: Just bread?

Me: Yes.

Chef: What kind would you like?

Me: Do you have wheat?

Chef: Sure.

Me: It won't be more than $3 will it?

Chef: It's on me.

Me: Oh, thank you!

He put two slices in a little Styrofoam container and marked "no charge, Chef" on the lid. Off I went as happy as could be, thanking God for providing my free lunch and that it was raining so I went downstairs instead of going outside!

Some people may scoff at this as just being a coincidence, but I commit my way to the Lord and do not believe in coincidence.  God is in ultimate control and I just heard Joel Osteen say we need to recognize the good things that happen to us as God's goodness to us and not just a lucky break or a coincidence.  Give God a chance, pray for a miracle.  You may be surprised too at what He will do!

I finished reading the Book of Acts.  Click on the link to read my review, Like Adventure?  Read the Book of Acts that I posted on our book blog, Grab a Book from Our Stack.

Please share a scripture highlight you read this week or a recent answer to prayer in the comments.  I'd love to hear about it!

9 Friday Fragments ( Art, food, TV, hockey, prayer)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

Art

Yes, the public does get to go inside the reading nest!
Remember last Friday I posted this funny looking thing that I saw in the library garden and wondered what it was? Daisy was closest--it's a reading nest! A few days later, I saw there was a sign about it.

All In The Family

Actress Jean Stapleton, three time Emmy award winner for her role as wife of Archie Bunker in the TV show, "All In The Family" died last Friday of natural causes at the age of 90! I remember our whole family enjoyed watching this show together which provided us with lots of laughter. Source: L.A. Times The show ran from 1971 to April, 1979--you can actually view entire episodes on YouTube! Here is the link to the theme song.

One Tough Guy

Hoping They Win Again!
During the hockey playoffs this week, Gregory Campbell, a player on the Bruins was hit so hard by the puck that it broke his leg, but he stayed on the ice for 50 seconds to help keep the Penguins from scoring! The Bruins won the game in double overtime. The guy actually skated off with a broken leg! We wish him a speedy recovery!

National Doughnut Day

In honor of this being National Doughnut Day, Giant Eagle has a good deal on them today--I think it was $3.99 per dozen while supply lasts.

Raisins

My hubby thought raisins were a healthy snack until he saw how much sugar is in a 1/4 cup serving: 29 grams! I learned raisins were high in sugar when I had a personal trainer at Fitworks and wrote down everything I ate.

New Food

Ever heard of dim sum? I didn't until I read about it over at The Kuantan blog.

New Cereal

My husband discovered two new cereals this week that he likes: Bare Naked-chocolate delight and True Love-carrot cake, yum yum!

Grumpy Cat

Thanks to YouTube and all her fans, Grumpy Cat has a movie deal! This cat always looks grumpy, even though she is actually sweet and playful. I discovered this big news when playing "Free Kibble" this morning.

Answered Prayer

Yesterday God answered my prayer to provide me lunch in an unusual way! Will share details in my Sunday Sharing post this week. (I had my yogurt, nuts, pudding and sardines but forgot my bread!)

Our Precious Miracle Cat, Survivor of Fatty Liver Disease: Mr. Moe

I first met Moe at the Parma Animal Shelter. He was an older cat, estimated his age to be eight. He was a big 12-pound, furry, white cat with black spots that reminded me of a cow. He was the only cat with those markings that I ever saw who had a black spot going up his nose. I felt sorry for him being in that tiny cage and he looked sad. I would go visit him on a weekly basis, just to see if he was adopted yet, but week after week, he was still there. He had been neutered and his front paws were declawed. He seemed like the perfect cat for us, but never having had one, I was hesitant.

I would also go visit the cats at PetSmart. They were always so cute. At that time, I didn't have any pets and neither of us ever owned a cat. The day I saw Moe at PetSmart with the Parma Animal Shelter volunteers, I went home and asked my husband, Gerard, if we could get him. My wonderful, husband said sure, if you want. So I hurried back and bought $70 worth of cat things and brought Moe home with me in June of 2000.

I wasn't crazy about his name, but did not want to confuse him so we just kept his name the same. We loved him so much. The first thing we did was set him up in our den upstairs because it was one of our smaller rooms so he could adjust gradually. He was pretty curious and after walking around the room a bit, he checked out the long walk-in closet. I was so excited about getting him that I called my friend, Debbie, to come over to meet him and she did.

We took a lot of pictures of Moe right away. Just like parents do when they have their first baby! That's how we felt, like proud parents. The strange thing though was, I noticed he would drink but he didn’t eat. We got the same kind of food he had at the shelter, but he didn't seem to be hungry. I didn't think too much of it at first, just that he was going through a period of adjustment and it would take a little time. After several days of not eating anything, I decided to try some different kinds of food and set up a whole buffet for him with about eight different kinds to try. He would look at them, sniff a little and turn away. At this point I was concerned. Even I knew that going weeks without food was not good.

I called the shelter and the woman said I had to get him to eat or he would die. Near the end of July, we took him to the vet at the corner of our street and they gave us some squirt stuff that we were told to squirt into his mouth 3 times a day. We tried but Moe was very strong, quick and determined not to let us do it. Both Gerard and I would gang up on him and Moe would always win. The most we ever got in was very minimal. I prayed that we'd be able to do this but Moe always won out. I prayed for Moe constantly, that God would make him better. I went back to the vet at the corner of our street to see if they could do it for us. Gerard and I both work but I was willing to bring him up there every day for them to do it but they wouldn't. They gave up on him and just said he's not going to make it. I called the shelter again, begging for their help telling them that if it was up to us to give him this stuff, he would die because we just couldn't do it. She said to bring him back and they would try to help him.

Dr. Hart, the vet in North Royalton worked with the Parma Animal Shelter pets and she took Moe home with her and force fed him for a week. He had developed fatty liver disease by then. Moe was constantly in my prayers all that week and we finally got a call from Dr. Hart saying that Moe was eating on his own again, that he probably had started developing this problem while still at the shelter and it wasn't our fault, and did we still want him. Of course we did! Gerard and I joyously picked up our Moe Cat from Dr. Hart as soon as we could and brought him back home. Sure enough, he became a big eater. After that shaky start, we always liked watching Moe eat.

We enjoyed many more years with him! He was the boss and ruled the house. We let him have whatever chair he wanted and waited on him hand and foot. We brought his food over to him where ever he chose to settle in at. We gave him Science Diet for senior cats which the was Dr. Hart's suggestion and one can of Fancy Feast for breakfast every day. He also enjoyed getting tuna treats now and then. He would even hop down off the chair for that.

We loved petting and playing with Moe. He sometimes would come on the bed with us in the morning and even come under the covers with me. Many nights, he would sleep on top of the covers at the foot of the bed with us. His favorite chair was also our favorite chair, but when I came from work to watch my taped soap opera each evening, Moe would jump down and let me have the chair. He didn't like to share. If we were sitting in it when he wanted it, he would let us know. He'd come over and sit right in front of us, looking up at us with his big eyes until we moved, which we did. We continued taking lots of pictures and video of Moe and even had two of the pictures made into posters and hung in our house.

Gerard and Moe were great buddies. When Gerard laid on the floor reading the newspaper, Moe would walk on it right where Gerard was trying to read. Once in awhile, Moe would even climb up on Gerard’s lap while he sat in a chair reading a book. Moe also liked to follow Gerard to the basement bathroom to watch him shave. Sometimes Moe climbed in the sink too. Moe would greet Gerard when he came home from work and really enjoyed his afternoon Fancy Feast treat Gerard gave him when we were trying to get him to gain some weight.
Moe enjoying his tuna pops

We took Moe to only Dr. Hart for his annual checkups. He developed a thyroid problem that was controlled with Methimazoile (goop that I put on the inside of one of Moe's ears every night at 9 p.m.). He didn't mind it and was very cooperative.
Spunky Doodle preparing to jump on Mr. Moe

After first checking with Dr. Hart and the Parma Animal Shelter for advice, in July of 2004, we brought in a stray little cute black and white kitten that was born at my dad's house in a litter of four. We introduced them very gradually, keeping Spunky only in the den for five weeks. We just brought Spunky out in a carrier by Moe so they could get to see each other some and meet safely. Moe would just hiss and then walk away. When we finally let them loose like Dr. Hart said we had to do if they were ever going to co-exist freely, Spunky would chase and jump on Moe. Moe would hiss at her and she'd usually back off. The thing that scared me though was that Spunky had little sharp claws and Moe didn't. When Spunky got to be six months old, we got her spayed and had her front paws declawed too. She lost some of her spunk after that and calmed down more. Moe finally accepted her and they got along. Spunky would still chase Moe, but it became kind of a game for him and he even seemed to get to like it. He would always outrun her to the chair. I'm not sure if she let him win all the time on purpose, but I think so. Whenever I saw Moe, I was always reminded of God's answer to my prayer.

One phase Moe went through was meowing loudly waking us up at 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. every morning for about two or three weeks. I think he mostly just wanted some attention and some of his Fancy Feast so I gave it to him. He was the boss. Sometimes, he would jump up by my pillow and start biting my hair--ouch!  (I later found out this is a sign of cats affection.) When I moved my head, he would overtake my pillow. That's when I gave him the nickname "Monster Moe." Once we turned our bed around so that the top was next to the wardrobe, he didn't jump up on the pillow anymore.

About six months before he died, I noticed Moe was losing weight and became concerned. He was drinking a lot of water and was still eating, but he was much skinnier. We took him to the vet and were told the thyroid medicine didn't seem to be working anymore so she increased it to the highest dosage and said we probably wouldn't have Moe another seven years. That's when I knew he was going downhill fast. The vet assured us though that he wasn't in any pain.

Spunky Was Always Ready to Play
We just had a wonderful last Christmas together. Moe was very energetic and fun on Christmas Day. He and Spunky played. The following Saturday though, Moe wouldn't eat any breakfast so I tried giving him some tuna, and he did eat that. He could barely walk, sort of wobbled along very slowly. I felt so sorry for him and very helpless. I knew his time was coming and prayed again, that he would just die peacefully in his sleep and not last long like this. I also prayed that we would be home with him when he died and that it would be soon so he wouldn't suffer for long. Throughout the day, he just took a few more bites of tuna, but that was it. By Sunday, his legs were even weaker. When he jumped off our bed in the morning to go for water, he just plopped on the floor and couldn't get up. I carried him to the water bowl and he took a drink. I went to church later than usual because I was so depressed and wanted to spend as much time with Moe as I could.

Monday I had to go back to work but Gerard was still off. He called and said Moe couldn't walk at all anymore. Gerard carried him around for water but he even got to where he couldn't drink any more. It broke our heart seeing him this way, but Gerard wanted him to die a natural death and stay with us as long as he could. I agreed. I had already put down my dad's three cats that year and didn't want to make it four.

God was gracious and merciful once again to us. We spent a quiet New Year's Eve with our cats, I let Moe lay on his mat on my lap and got to pet and talk to him for an hour before going to bed. It was a precious time for me and Moe. He never stayed on my lap before. The longest was maybe one minute. Moe just died  on New Year's Eve after Gerard and I finally went to bed, but both Gerard and I had lots of time with him his last few days. Gerard woke up at 1:30 and saw Moe had died when he went to pet him. We'll always have fond memories of him. We buried Moe in our backyard at 8:20 a.m. New Year's Day of 2008. (What a way to start a new year--I sure hope it gets better along the way!)

We were blessed with having Moe for 7 1/2 years after the vet had given up on him back in 2000. It really is a miracle that Moe recovered from the fatty liver disease to live to be at least 15 1/2! He was our wonderful, precious Mr. Moe Cat!!!  We will always remember him!

Sunday Sharing: A Direct Line To God and a Password Tip

Happy Easter Everyone!
This week I have chosen two verses as my highlights of the week that both relate to prayer:

Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you.  Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered.  (John 15:7 - Jesus speaking)
You will ask the Father in my name, and I won't have to ask Him for you.  (John 16:26 - Jesus speaking)
Isn't it wonderful that because of Jesus' death and resurrection, we can have a relationship with the God of the universe!  I don't know about you, but that just blows me away.  I love that I can talk to God in prayer anytime, anywhere and know that He will answer.  It's like having a direct line to God without being put on hold or dropped into voice mail.  He is always ready, willing and available to listen.

I would like to point out though, an important couple points that jump out at me in these verses.  The first is that Jesus tells me to "stay joined" (contemporary English version) to Him and let His teachings become a part of me.  The obvious question is, how exactly do I do that?  I think the key is to be willing to obey His Word and actually apply it in my life.  With the help of the Holy Spirit, praise the Lord, I can do that!  I have finally grown in my spiritual walk to actually get to the place where I look forward to reading the Bible some every day.  It does help me to jot down a verse that I especially find interesting and then choose a highlight for the week. By using different verses for my passwords, it helps me to keep them in my mind.  (see end of this post for example).

The second point from the next verse is to ask the Father in Jesus' name.  I know sometimes people pray, especially at public functions, when they do not do this.  There is power in the name of Jesus and we are told by Jesus himself to pray to God the Father in His name.

Once again, it was difficult choosing just one highlight.  Other verses I considered choosing were John 17:3, John 18:4-6 and John 18:36.  I hope you read your Bible each day and develop a close personal relationship with God too.  Happy Easter as we all join together in celebrating Christ's death for us and His resurrection!

Password tip idea:

Keeping in mind that a strong password is long but easy to remember, has numbers and letters, isn't a word found in the dictionary, here is an example of a strong password using a Bible verse:  ItbGcthateGen11 (Just use the first letter of the words, the first letter of the book where it's found or the abbreviation for the boo and the chapter and verse.  This example is Genesis 1:1 which says, In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.  To make it even stronger, substitute a special character for the comma and/or period.

So, what is your scripture highlight of the week?  (I'd love to know what you think of my password tip too!  Don't worry, I am not using this one for any of my passwords.)

Devastating Monster Wildfire in Colorado--PRAY

I am praying for the firefighters trying to get out the wildfire in Colorado and other western states as well.  It seems they are having an especially hard time because of the winds which keep changing.  The Waldo-Canyon fire has spread to Colorado Springs, a large city, causing 35,000 to leave their homes, probably to burn.  I feel so bad for these people and can only imagine the hurt, sadness, and devastation they are going through.

When I saw on Facebook that our youth minister's parents and sisters had to evacuate and are involved in this, that's when I started to pray.  Our youth minister is currently at Word of Life camp in New York with a lot of our youth this week and am sure this news has put a damper on his spirit.  I hope you will join me in praying for him, his family and the many other people who have been evacuated and will probably lose their homes as well as the firefighters in the effort to extinguish this "monster."

I hear people knock Facebook but it really is a great tool to keep in touch with people you know and share quickly what is happening in your life with those who care.

Our Sweet Dog, Abby, Is Fighting For Her Life

Hi Daddy!  I'm so tired, really need to sleep.
Last night was a nightmare for us!  After a good day at work, Gerard left me the car at the bus stop so I wouldn't have to walk in the rain.  He and Abby welcomed me home at the bus stop and continued on their evening walk while I drove on home.  I had an uneasy feeling and prayed that they would both get home safely.  Well, that didn't happen!

I was upstairs feeding Spunky Doodle when my cell phone rang.and a lady told me my dog and husband were hurt three or four streets from our house.  She said I should come and I'd see all the police cars and flashing lights.  I just threw some food for Spunky on her table and hurried on down to throw some in Manny's bowl, then out the door I went.  I was so scared at what I'd find.

Two Rottweilers came running loose and attacked Abby really bad.  She had bites on her ear, neck, legs, abdomen and groin area and was all bloody but was conscious and could walk when I arrived.  Gerard was by the EMS truck screaming about his dog.  Gerard beat the dogs trying to get them off Abby but it was useless and they bit his left hand too.  He told me later that he felt so helpless, he tried to protect her and couldn't.  He called for help and it seemed like a long time before anyone came.  Some neighbors came and beat the dogs with sticks, one guy shot a gun in the air or at the ground to try to scare them off.  Finally they left her alone and fortunately the cops were able to catch the dogs and track down the owners.

I walked Abby to our car and called to make sure Bartel's was still open (thank God for cell phones).  I was so relieved when they said one doctor was still there and I could bring her in.  They all know and love Abby too.  A nice policeman lifted Abby into the front seat of our car for me and another one brought Gerard to the hospital shortly after.  Once we got Abby admitted and the papers signed for surgery, we went to the hospital to get Gerard's hand looked at.

Fortunately, no bones were broken, but he had to get a tetanus shot, an x-ray, have his hand bandaged and in a contraption for a couple days.  He said it didn't hurt but I know that's because he was only thinking about Abby.  She was in surgery for a couple hours and the wonderful staff at Bartel's stayed way past their normal hours to help her.  The surgeon said she did well through surgery and was looking good and doing well but the first 72 hours are critical.  Any number of things could still go wrong so we would sure appreciated all the prayers we can get for our wonderful dog.

We stopped in to see her this morning, but were only allowed to stay ten minutes because she was on pain killers and needs her rest.  The doctor kept saying she was doing well and looking good but I sure think she looks very bad, certainly not good.  I don't know what dog he was looking at.

This is Abby looking good!
The animal warden told us the owners were cited for their dogs running loose and declared them dangerous and highly recommended that they be euthanized.  It's sad for them too and they did ask about Gerard and Abby.  The police and dog warden both said they are responsible for all the medical and vet bills that we will get so I do really hope they step up and do the right thing by paying them.  The estimate we got for Abby is around $2,000 but she is so worth it!  We miss her so much and are overcome with sadness but praying God will strengthen her, heal her and that she would be okay but I think it's going to take a long time for her to fully recover.

I know that God's will for us is to give thanks in everything, and I certainly do.  I am thankful Abby wasn't killed on the spot by those two dogs, thankful that Gerard had his cell phone with him and I had mine with our vet's number in the contacts, that we were able to take her to our own vet which is close by and for the wonderful doctors and technicians at Bartels.  I am also thankful that the police have pictures of everything to document the report, that they were able to impound the dogs and that the owners were found and cited, it's only right.

The Time I Feared For Gerard’s Safety (Writer’s Workshop)

It was a cold, snowy day. Gerard had his Camaro which was no good in the snow. He gets home from work before I do, but somehow I got home before him, maybe I had the day off. That I don’t remember. I do remember how anxious I was to see him pull into the driveway. I don’t even remember what month it was. All I remember is how I kept praying that God would keep him safe and help him get home soon while pacing back and forth.

Bad thoughts kept going through my head like I prayed for his safety at work and he broke his ankle anyway. What if he’s in an accident? What would I do without him now? I hated these thoughts so replaced them with songs of praise to God instead.

I opened the front blinds so I could see farther down the street and stood by the window watching for him. Winter storms can be extremely nerve wrecking. Every time I saw headlights coming down the street my heart would jump in my chest hoping it was him. Then the car kept on going by and I’d pray some more. Finally, a car came and turned into our driveway. I was ecstatic and so relieved to see my husband that I thanked God for getting him home safely and met him at the front door, welcoming him home.

One of the best things I look forward to when we retire is not having to go anywhere in bad weather.

This is in response to Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop prompt: A time you feared for the safety of a loved one.

Our Happy Reunion--Writer's Workshop

We were so relieved to hear that Mr. Moe did not die and that we could have him back.  Our prayers were answered!

Mr. Moe was our very first cat that we adopted from the Parma Animal Shelter. When he first came to live with us, he wouldn’t eat anything. He was eating Max Cat at the shelter, but would not eat it at our house. I lined up a variety of different kinds of cat food for him--a regular buffet, but he just sniffed and left. I thought he just needed some time to adjust to his new home, but it turned out he had fatty liver disease. He didn't eat for a month so was a very sick cat. He moved and played and let us pet him though so we didn't realize how sick he really was. He seemed perfectly normal except he wouldn't eat. We should have taken him to the vet after two days of not eating, but we were new cat owners and did not know any better.

Eventually, after almost four weeks, we took him to the vet at the corner of our street but they did not want to help. I was in constant prayer for Moe that he would eat and be all right.  The vet at the end of our street gave me some food in a tube that I was supposed to squirt into his mouth which Gerard and I both tried unsuccessfully to do. One of us wrapped a towel around him while the other tried opening his mouth and squirting it in. What a joke—Moe always got away with very little in his mouth. We kept on trying two or three times a day with no success. I was desperate and asked the corner vet if we could bring him in for them to do it but they said no. We just lived up the street right across from the place so I asked if someone could come over to our house to do it but they wouldn’t. They just said we should take him back to the shelter.

I called the shelter in tears, and they took him back, assuring us that it wasn’t our fault and that they would try to save him. Their vet, Dr. Hart, took Mr. Moe home with her and force fed him for an entire week. He started eating on his own again. She called us to see if we still wanted him and said once they have that disease and get over it, they seldom get it again.

We were so happy to get Mr. Moe back! Of course we wanted him! We went to Dr. Hart's and I still remember how happy I felt when she drove in with Moe on the seat with her. We'll always be grateful to Dr. Hart for saving his life! The shelter guessed that he was 8 years old when we got him, and he lived with us for another 7 years. We loved him very much and still miss him. He went to the rainbow bridge the last day of 2007.

You can vote for Moe's story in Sparkle's June Shelter Cat contest--there are 24 entries!

This is in response to Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop prompt:  Write about a happy reunion.

God Comes Through Again!

Call unto me and I will answer thee, and show the great and mighty things which thou knowest not.--Jeremiah 33:3
Back at the beginning of March, I was reassigned at work to a different floor and went from the world of corporate law to litigation. I am a secretary at a law firm who has been very good to me over the 23 years I have been there.

Switching areas was challenging because there are some secretarial functions related to litigation that corporate secretaries never had to deal with. I was leery and a bit shaken up because being on one floor for so long, I had friends on that floor. The first three days were very rough. I went from working for one corporate attorney who was not very busy to three litigators, one of which was extremely busy and who had some strange quirks, was very picky, and basically hard to please. I came home all frazzled and thinking about work. I do not like to think about work when I am at home.

I prayed God would help me adjust and learn quickly. He did. I reminded myself that God is in control and I just need to trust Him. I chose to rejoice in the Lord each day and trust that God was directing my path according to Proverbs 3:5 & 6. After the first week, I felt better about my new assignment and by the end of the second week felt it would work out okay. I like being busier and am not afraid to learn new things. Just yesterday I learned another new thing about how to view pleadings on the court site that were filed electronically.

But God really came through for me. That attorney who I was basically on pins and needles with left the firm to work elsewhere and in his place I got a new guy that just joined our firm so isn't as busy. Things are no longer so crazy. When life throws us a curve, it's nice to know that God is watching over us and does not allow anything to come into our lives that he will not help us through if we put our faith in Him.

My Prayer Box Is Full--Praise The Lord!

See that picture filled with all those little scraps of paper? Those are all my answered prayers! It is so encouraging to see how God has come through in the past. I started using this system a few years ago and now I will make the first dump into a bigger box. The box next to it has my current prayer requests. As I pray about something new, I write it on a small slip of paper and put it into this box. Then when I get an answer, I jot down the date on the paper, fold it up and drop it into my answered prayer box.

My latest answer is for Yaya to be able to adopt Alex and according to her blog, it looks like it will happen. I'm still praying that the details will all be worked out without and further complications.

I like this better than a prayer list because I don't have to keep going back to hunt for the current requests. Plus, I think it makes for a more visual record. I came across this idea when reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I also share this idea with my Sunday School classes. Maybe you would like to use it too--feel free.

I first shared this idea on my other blog in March of 2008: Pray Without Ceasing

We're Praying Together Again--Answered Prayer

Sometimes life just gets in the way of what’s important and we need to re-evaluate our priorities now and then. This is what happened with Gerard and I. God is so patient with us and works in our hearts even when we don’t always realize it. When we first got married, we spent a little time every day praying together. For some reason, we stopped and neither of us remember why, other than schedules change and we just never found a good time to do it. Last October I even wrote a post about this: Do You Pray Together?.

I missed it because before I was married, finding someone who I would feel comfortable praying with was on my “list” of things I was looking for in a mate. I thought Gerard was that guy because he suggested we always end our times together with prayer when we were dating. The last few years we made this one of our “New Year’s Resolutions” but it didn’t happen. Last year, I started to pray that God would give Gerard the courage to bring it up and that we would start praying together again and the strength to be the spiritual leader in our home.

Monday night, we were both having a restless night and out of the darkness, he says, “Karen, we’re going to start praying together again. I don’t know why we stopped, probably my fault, but we’re going to do it again starting today. When you get up at 4 o’clock, you wake me up and we’ll pray together.” I was so happy to hear him say that, not the 4 o’clock part though, not necessary for him to get up that early. I’ve been getting up at that time to get my Entrecard drops done before I go to work. (Some of you may have noticed my comments have been showing up earlier.) I said, “how about right after you get dressed instead of 4 a.m.?” He agreed and that is now our prayer time together.

If you want to see some change in your spouse, why not give God a chance and pray about it. Nagging usually doesn’t work and confrontation is usually uncomfortable. As Nora, my Bible Study leader for “The Excellent Wife” said one night, “duck and get out of the way so God can work.” This is what I decided to do and will continue to do.

Do You Pray Together?

When Gerard and I were dating, we would usually end our time together by praying out loud with each other while holding hands. This was his idea, not mine, but I got to liking it because I felt he could be the spiritual leader in our relationship and it was important to me to find someone to marry to whom I would be willing to submit as I believe a good wife should.

Personally, I'm not one who is comfortable praying out loud. I look on my relationship with God as very personal, always have, and I pray from my heart sincerely so sometimes I cry. This is embarrassing for me and awkward for anyone listening to me. I just can't help it. This is why it was so wonderful that I found a guy who I was actually comfortable enough with to pray out loud about my feelings and concerns. I also discovered things that bothered him in this way.

After we were married though, we only kept this up for maybe a year. I'm not really sure why, but it just seemed as though we had a hard time finding the time that worked. In the mornings, we're both rushed and so having our separate devotions is faster. The evenings go by so quick and then we're tired. I miss it and did try to at least pray together on the weekends for awhile but that too didn't work for long. It seemed it just wasn't a priority and so other things would come up and we let it go.

Do any of you pray with your spouse regularly and if so, how does it work? When do you do it? How often? Do you think it strengthens or helps your marriage/family? There was an article in the Arts & Life section of The Plain Dealer--"When life tugs, prayer's the cord that ties spouses" by Terry Pluto which got me thinking about this.

A Bus Blessing

My new year's resolution this year was to be a blessing to someone each day. Some days go by that I think, well, I can't really think of who I blessed today, but today is not one of them.

I take the bus to and from work everyday with pretty much the same group of people. I am a quiet, reserve person, and usually just stick my nose in a book when I sit down and keep it there until it's time to get off. Yesterday was no different, but as I was getting off, I saw a hat in the seat where one of the regular riders had sat.

My mind flashed back to when I left my umbrella on the bus and never did get it back, so instead of giving the hat to the driver to turn in to lost and found, I picked it up and took it with me with the resolve to give it back to the gentlemen in the morning.

Today when I brought the hat back, the man's eyes just lit up and he was so grateful that we even had a nice chat! His first words were "God is good." He told me he prayed that God would bless the person who took it and that he would get it back. He said prayer works and is powerful. I said I knew and told him I was a believer too. It turned out he knows my brother-in-law and was neighbors with a couple I know from church.

We introduced ourselves finally after riding the bus together for almost a year together. His name is Vic and the girl who always sits next to him is Anna. I gave him a bookmark that has a picture of the book I wrote on it and that tells about it on the back ("My Funny Dad, Harry"). I told him I wrote about my dad and how God worked in my life and will bring a copy along with me tomorrow to show him. (Of course, I hope he buys it.)

Is there something in your life today that you are concerned about--turn it over to God in prayer!

Philippians 4:6&7 Do not be anxious for anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requsts to God. And the peace of god, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

Now go and be a blessing to someone today!
