Let's Try This Again--Bloodwork Take 2!

I put on My Grumpy Old Bear
shirt and did a FB post
Any Medical appointment stresses me out and our annual checkup is no exception.  Yesterday, the technician tried three times to take my blood with no success before giving up.  Not only that, but it hurt too!  She blew two veins and made a scratch on my hand when she yanked it out.  Then, she put a stretchy bandage on my arm and hand so I couldn't even move my arm much.  I took those off as soon as I got home and replaced it with normal band-aids.  I missed playing pickleball because of this appointment so I wasn't happy to begin with, but this got me mad because now I have to try again today at the lab at UH Hospital so have to fast again!  I gave thanks to God that this is my biggest problem, compared to what other people go through, this really is no big deal--actually just a huge inconvenience.

Fortunately, I am also thankful that:

(1) UH Hospital is very close to my house.

(2) Their lab for bloodwork opens at 6:30 a.m. so I drank 4.5 bottles water after I got up and arrived at 6:33.  I was back home at 7:03 and ate breakfast--Yay!

(3) I didn't have to wait long at all.

(4) The Lab person was sympathetic and nice about having to do extra work by calling my doctor's office for a new order because the technician there screwed up and put the labels on the bottles before actually getting the blood.  Consequently, it showed as already being done in the system.

(5)  She got blood expertly on the first try without any problem; moreover, it didn't hurt at all!  Not even a little when she put in the needle.

(6) The whole experience gave me a blog post.

4 1/2 Empty Bottles before 6:30 a.m.
They say it helps to drink water before the blood draw so I drank tons of water this morning before I left, even more than the 2 1/2 that I drank yesterday.  I wanted to do whatever, to be sure they could get it this second try.

This is not the first time this happened.  It happened once to my husband and once to me before so next year, I will ask the doctor for the order and go right to UH that same day to get the blood drawn by the experts there.  Since that's what they do all day, they are way better at it!

Thus, my verse of the day is I Thessalonians 5:18 which says:  In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Thankful Thursday: Fresh Air

I am thankful the windows are open today so I can enjoy some fresh air.  I like being an indoor only cat, but like the feel of breeze on my fur and watching birds and squirrels.   Visit Thankful Thursday Blog Hop.

Thankful Thursday

This first week of January 2020 I am thank for:

(1)  Silver Sneakers--I signed up for free and got free membership at Planet Fitness and the Y.

(2)  The mild winter weather we are having.

(3)   Lunch at Cracker Barrel with my husband.

(4)   Playing Cribbage and Pinochle again with new friends at the Parma Sr. Community Center.  I used to play Cribbage a long time ago with my mom and Pinochle a long time ago when I worked for Buckeye Union Insurance Company.

(5)  I broke a couple records this week:  Got an all-time high for me on the AARP Word Wipe game of 14,723.

(6)  After not shooting pool for a year or so, I cleared the table in just 16 shots breaking my old record of 17 set back in 1917!

(7)  I got my 15-yr.-old cat to play a new game with me using a balloon.  (see video in previous post)

(8)  My Anthem OTC card came in the mail that I can use for up to $70 worth of certain products free at Walmart or CVS each quarter!

(9)  Our investments are all at an all-time high as of the end of December!

(10)  Played Pickleball and won more games than I lost--usually I break even.

(11)  I enjoyed getting my husband to join me at the Sr. Center for dealer's choice day when he won Rummy and I won Cribbage and Crazy Eights.

(12)  Had fun playing chair volleyball at the Sr. Center for the first time.  Looking forward to being on a team when they start a new season beginning February.

I love being retired!  I have some fun every day now!

Thankful Thursday: Indians Swept Detroit and We Were There!

My husband and I were both off work yesterday and went to the Indians game, seeing them sweep the Tigers in 13 innings, winning 11-10 with a walk-off balk ending the game.  Never saw one end like that before!

Although the forecast was horrible:  Predicted Thunder storms for the morning and scattered thunder storms all afternoon, God answered my prayer for not having it rain on us or during the ballgame.  It was in the 70s and sunny!  Gorgeous day!

We had very good seats, free food as much as we wanted and a wonderful day in the middle of the week!  I did not over stuff, having 4 slices of the vege pizza, one of the cherry dessert pizza and five cups of ice cream.  What a treat it was.

Our pets were wondering where we were because their supper was later than usual, but fortunately they did not starve.  We went on a nice walk with Abby after she ate, enjoying the beautiful day, stretching our legs after sitting all afternoon.

Thankful Thursday

Here's some things that brightened up my week:

I am thankful for Facebook and the many friends who I can easily go to when I need advice through that medium.  Thanks to Kathy over at The Junk Drawer, I ordered a Dell computer with windows 7 and thanks to Lin's advice (Hobbes' mom and Duck and Wheel with String) I bought a portable hard drive so I can easily back up my pictures and files.  (Sort of didn't have a choice when I decided to finally go ahead and get a new computer.

We actually had a sunny warm day this week on Tuesday!  The temperature was close to 70 degrees finally!  Then back to 40s the next day.

I saw some plants popping out of the ground for the first time yesterday and the birds are chirping again.

Still enjoying playing the Lumosity games to keep my brain sharp.  It's fun to beat my old record highs because it proves I am making progress.

I love it when what I think is going to be a not-so-good class turns out to be very good after all when God comes through and gives me a new idea that gets the boys interested and involved.  This happened again last week when our lesson was on John 15 about abiding in Christ.  We worked together making a vine with branches and grapes out of construction paper.  They really liked doing it!

What little things brightened you week?

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful that I have a wonderful husband and that he gets to start working only four days a week as of yesterday.  He has chosen to have Wednesdays off at my suggestion and he had a very productive day.  Here is how he spent his day off:

He got up at his regular early time so he could walk our dog, Abby, as usual and drive me to the bus stop for work.

He took Abby to the groomer for a bath.

Washed the towels.

He washed my car.

He got his fill of computer time.

He vacuumed.

He scrubbed the kitchen floor.

He met me at the bus stop when I came home and brought the car so I didn't have to walk (it looked like rain).

We watched a bit of TV together in the evening--"Sell This House" and then he watched the Bruins continue their winning streak.

How do you spend a day off?  If you could have a 4-day work week, what day would you choose to be off?

No Wind!

Just yesterday when it was so cold outside I said at least we didn't have snow. In fact, we made it all the way to Dec. 11 without having to shovel here in Parma, Ohio. Then this morning, we woke up to this:

Although the temperature is only 11 degrees, I am thankful there is no wind today because I cleaned off the car and shoveled without getting cold. I dressed very warm. Got in some great exercise this way too to start the day!

What Are 5th Grade Boys Thankful For?

I teach a Sunday School class of 5th grade boys so last week we played a little game like Scattegories. I asked them to write down things they really are thankful for in three minutes and for every item on your list that no one else had, they got a point. (The one with the most points got a piece of candy.) Here are some of the things they are thankful for:

No. 1 answer: God/Jesus, family, food
No. 2 answer: house/home
No. 3 answer: animals/pets, water, school/teachers
No. 4 answer: friends/clothes

Then came the original things:
Bible, life, air, plants, electricity, technology, iPods, cars, trucks, holidays, forgiveness, laughter, art, girls, love, paper, nature, colors, Steve Jobs, Guy who created skateboards, guns, good health, heaven, oxygen, photosynthesis, the President, government, light, snow, church, milk, warmth/heat, and toys.
I thought they did a very good job on their lists!

Things I am thankful for that haven't already been mentioned are:

answered prayer, my husband, a good job, steady employment, indoor plumbing, blue skies, cooks, restaurants, stores, sports, buses, and that I live in the USA.

When  I see pictures and hear about the poor living conditions many people around the world deal with every day, it breaks my heart.  That is why I love going through the World Vision, Samaritan's Purse and The Jesus Film Catalogs that list many needy projects and choosing ones I want to donate to.  Instead of ordering another wool shirt that cost $105 for my husband who already has lots of shirts and several others I am buying for him, I donated that $100 to World Vision where my donation is multiplied by 8 for Christmas gifts which include:
  • Nutritious food
  • Warm clothes
  • Sturdy boots
  • Books, toys, and games
  • Vital medicines
  • And more

Now that was money well spent!  I hope you will join me in this.

Joining up with Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop:  Something you are thankful for.

Give Thanks All The Time, Not Just on Thanksgiving

“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!” (1 Chronicles 16:34, AMP)
We should not only give thanks for all God has done, but also for the things he is going to do.  This demonstrates our faith in God's goodness and faithfulness.
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.  Serve the LORD with gladness:  come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God:  it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise:  be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting:  and his truth endureth to all generations. --Psalms 100
Every time we pray, we should have a song on our lips and give thanks.  Do we spend as much time thanking God as we do requesting for things?
In every thing give thanks:  for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. --I Thessalonians 5:18
If you are unsure of God's will for you, giving thanks no matter what situation you are in is a good place to start.  This verse makes it plain that God's will for us is to give thanks.

Here is a cute video about giving thanks that my cats insisted I share with you.

Seriously, though, we are very thankful to God for answering our prayers this year for our dog, Abby.  When she was attacked back in January by two Rotweilers, biting her 15 times and even have a hole in her groin area, the vet did not think she would recover.  We are so thankful she has made a full recovery, the hole closed up with no complications and all her fur has grown back.

We are thankful God has been so good to us and thank him for being at work in our lives.  I am thankful He holds our future and knows exactly what is ahead for all our days and is in control.  He will help us through anything that he allows to come into our lives so we can be at peace.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERY DAY!

See Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop for more Thanksgiving posts.  This is in response to this prompt:  We’re going around the table and it’s your turn to share what you are thankful for…go!

Gifts That Made My Day! by Abby

Look Abby, this one is for you!
Every Saturday at our house is "Abby" day because I get extra time with my mom and dad, extra walking and extra treats, but last Saturday was a very special day for me. Not only did I get most of my stitches taken out, but there was a package addressed to ME from Boston Baked Bonz (www.bbbonz.com)!

Quinoa Crunchies
It had a Get Well Card from the Kids of Red Pine Mountain with Woofs and Hugs to me!  Mountain Woman is one of  my mom's blogging buddies who also has doggies who heard about my unfortunate adventure and were concerned.  My mom and dad were both excited about this special Get Well Card because it has wild flower seeds in the paper and in the spring they can wet it and plant it just below the soil and wild flowers are supposed to grow!  I am not that interested in flowers, but they thought it was very cool!

Gerard opened it for me and kept pulling out more and more things including a tug toy, a bone pillow, a very fancy collar with hearts on it and a couple boxes of special treats:  baked Quinoa Crunchies--dog treats with organic Quinoa and nutritious CRUNCH in every bite (25 doggie cookies) and apple muffins!

I never had anything like these apple muffins before!
Wow, all this for me?

I tried my fancy collar on too--it is so pretty but the picture is blurry because I was too excited about all this nice stuff to held still.  I am not into toys like the cats, but I sure love the food!  My mom has a friend who has dogs that play with toys so I will let them have them so they will not go to waste.

Thanks so much for thinking of me and sending me all this wonderful stuff, especially the (cookies and muffins) all the way from Boston!  I hope you will all visit their blog at Red Pine Mountain!  Let them know Abby sent you.

(50 cents per legitimate comment goes to Caroline's Kids Pet Rescue for February in honor of cat appreciation month!)

Skit On Giving Thanks With A Grateful Heart

This video is by The Skit Guys. Visit their website for more great videos!

We have so much to be thankful for! Everything we have is from God and when we realize that we are really dependent on Him for everything,we will have a thankful heart all the time, not just on Thanksgiving. Look for God's purpose in every situation and be good stewards of all the things He has given to you.

I was thrilled to see my nephew and his wife dedicate their two little children to the Lord last Sunday. Children are gifts from God and a very huge responsibility.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!  Read about My Favorite Thanksgiving!

A Thanksgiving Day Poem (Writer's Workshop)

This is the year we got our dog,
So thankful it is not a hog.
Abby, Dabby Doo,
We love you!

We also love our cats,
Even though they don’t wear hats.
We are thankful they both love to play,
And do so without any pay!

God is so good,
He knows what we need,
Which is a good night’s sleep,
So we don’t fall in a heap!

Although Cancer struck,
We did not get drunk.
As we looked up in faith,
God restored my health!

So this Thanksgiving,
We’ll be eating
At Hometown Buffet
In the middle of the day!

Thanking God for all his blessings,
Including our blogging buddies
Who visit our blog and comment away
Leaving us compliments that make our day!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL AS YOU COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!

So Much To Be Thankful For!

So it is the end of November. Means cold weather, dark a little after 5 p.m., football, Thanksgiving and "Black Friday"!! (The big shopping day after Thanksgiving when the stores open real early and there are sales everywhere!)

Don't get me wrong, I have so much to be thankful for. A wonderful wife, my health, a job, a computer, Direct TV, Satellite radio, a membership in a nice gym, two nice cats, two cars, things I take for granted, but I know lots of people who do not have that. I mean God has blessed me very well! That being said, I just love Black Friday.

I look forward to getting up early and shopping most of the day looking for that perfect card and gift for Karen. Truth be told, Black Friday is, other than Christmas, my favorite day of the year! Am I wrong to think that? Your opinions are welcomed!

Yes, I am a guy and I like to shop!

Thanks So Much For Your Kindness!

One of my very nice blogging friends, Mountain Woman, recently purchased the book I wrote about my dad called My Funny Dad, Harry and wrote a very nice post about it and me. Here is the link to her post: Spotlight On My Funny Dad Harry. It really made my day! I love to hear how people enjoyed reading about my dad. She had mentioned to me that she ordered it so I was anxious to hear what she thought.

She has a very interesting personal blog about her life in Vermont. Please stop by to visit. If you click the title of this post, it should take you right to her blog.
