I Can Still Bowl--Yay!

I finally joined a bowling league last year after not being in one since breast cancer hit the summer of 2009.  I was unsure if I could do it, but used to enjoy it very much so decided to give it a try.  I did carry a 150 average, but when I cam back ended up with just a 137 average.  However, I managed to have one super day in Jan. of this year which I bowled my best game ever--226!  That proved to me that I did still "have it."

I was nervous and kept taking deep breaths to try to relax.  I tried to focus on bowling and not look at the score at all along the way.  I knew I was doing really well and didn't want to lose my focus.  I didn't talk much to anyone during the game either, just kept my head down and waited for my turn trying not to be distracted.  I managed to bowl the whole game without any open frames and put together three strikes in a row twice!  It was such fun!  My first two games were only 138 and 130.

It was a strange league though.  It was a group of seniors that bowled Thursday mornings but without teams.  I never heard of a league without teams, but it was fun.  We had six lanes and bowled with different people each week.  Each bowler was assigned a number and between games a number would be randomly drawn.  The winner received about $10!  Also, they played another money game where at the 5th frame, a guy would go through and sort pairs based on their scores.  Highest score would be paired with the lowest and on down.  The pair with the highest total pins would win a few dollars.

The day I bowled the 226 I was paired up with Carol and we won total pins that game!  She took my picture afterward and a few weeks later surprised me with a big trophy for bowling such a high game.  I'm not sure if the trophy was from the whole league or if she just did it on her own, but I thought it was very nice!

An Alternate Bowling Style Lesson (Writer's Workshop)

Sometimes bowling can be quite frustrating. I learned to use the 5-step approach and aim at a spot on the lane such as one of the arrows to give me a closer target.  Bend your knee to get down low, keep your shoulders parallel to the foul line, keep your wrist straight, follow-through, etc.  Yes, lots to remember.  The goal is to do it right often enough that it becomes natural and you don't have to think about it.

Yesterday I read Two-Handed Bowler Wows Way To Title With Weird Technique on Yahoo news about a high schooler, Tim Wolchko, who uses a two-handed technique only using the finger holes with great success. He has bowled 8 perfect games! I have bowled zero perfect games. I am amazed that he can throw it like this with such good control and with such great results! Next time I bowl and get frustrated when my tried and true method is not working, I may just try it this way even though this is how little kids sometimes bowl.

Here's a short video of him teaching his strange technique:

Lesson learned: Bowling doesn't have to be complicated as long as you can be consistent!

This is in response to Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop prompt, "Lesson Learned."

10 Things We Learned in Week 1 of 2011 (news, places, videos, pets, books, humor)

Tasmania

I've heard of the Tasmanian Devil but didn't know Tasmania is actually a city in Australia! It is as I learned when I when blog trotting over at Life . . . Live It: My Place In This Big World. It sounds like a really fun place to live.

Calendar Widget

I learned that Christian Women Online have calendar widgets.

Bowling

I used to have a set of plastic bowling pins and it was called Duck Pin bowling. Over at Karen's Opinion, I learned that in the Easter states there are actually Duck Pin bowling establishments! We were going to go bowling on New Year's Day until I called and found out it was $3.75 per game. That's is so outrageous! I remember when it used to be 50 cents a game!

Manny joined us late, sitting on the corner table.

Blogger Pics

Boy do I feel slow. I just noticed this week that if I click on the image I upload when drafting a post, there is an option for adding a caption. How long has that been there?

YouTube Cat Videos

According to the Freekibblekat trivia, there are over 584,000 cat videos on YouTube! Here is one of ours I especially like when we first got Abby:

If you to to our navigation bar and click on "videos" it will take you right to our YouTube channel where you can browse all of them. They aren't all cat videos.

Poll Results For Favorite Genres

Over at our book blog we had a little survey to find out what type of book most people like. We only had 41 votes; however, Mystery and Suspense was the overwhelming favorite with 30 votes. Historical fiction came in second with 17.  (The links take you to the mystery and suspense book reviews Gerard and I wrote on our book blog.  I'm sure you will find something you like!)

Sad News About Cats

Over at Sparkle's blog I learned about the Last Hope Cat Kingdom sanctuary having a fire and many cats lost their lives. The good news is that it will be rebuilt. Hop over there to read all about it at Give New Hope to Last Hope Cat Kingdom.

Tupperware

I just found out this week that I can put Tupperware in the microwave. Now when I take pizza to work for lunch, I don't need to bring paper plates along. I can just heat it up on my Tupperware lid!

Homeless Ted Williams

A homeless Ted Williams of Ohio finally gets lots of job offers because of his voice and a video going viral. He accepted the offer of doing voiceovers for the Cleveland CAVS. You can read all about it at Mashable/Video: Golden-Voiced Homeless Man Ted Williams Scores Job Offers After Video Goes Viral. the Quicken Loans President also offered to find him a home! Now this is the kind of news I like to hear.

An Old Fart

Thanks to this Alzheimer's Test over at Comedy Plus, I learned that I am an old fart! Boo hoo. I challenge you to take the test to see if you are one too!

4Things I Learned This Week--#72

Kids Bowl Free All Summer

At 1 Prince and 3 Princesses I learned about a free summer bowling program for kids. Certain bowling centers across the USA and Canada are offering two free games of bowling every day to kids all summer long! Just go to www.kidsbowlfree.com to sign them up!

Rainforest Favorite

When I asked my 5th grade boys Sunday School class what their favorite Rainforest animal was, I was surprised they said it was the poisonous frogs.  My favorite ones to watch are the otters.  I also find the python fascinating when he's on the move.

Grease Stains

At Apartment Therapy I learned a cool tip on how to remove grease stains: simply rub chalk onto greasy stains and the chalk powder will absorb the grease, making the stain easily removable by the laundry soap in the wash.

No Sales

I went to order some more author copies of my book and learned that none sold since the beginning of the year. It looks like Mountain Woman and me are the only ones who buy it. It's a bit depressing.

Disappointed in Wii Bowling

I've heard so much about the Wii that I was excited to try it out at our library. They had the Wii bowling set up on a Saturday morning for all ages to play. There were two units set up with about six people on each. I thought it was okay but certainly not great, probably since I didn't do well. Perhaps I would have done better if I had actually taken 5 steps as I do when I actually bowl, but there really wasn't space enough and everyone else was just taking one step forward and letting it go so I did the same. After playing this, I'm glad we didn't get one.

I suppose for someone who is housebound or unable to bowl for real due to a physical problem, it would be fun but for myself, I much prefer doing the real thing. I assume I would feel the same way about the other games as well. I can't imagine tennis being anywhere close to reality based on just the space limitation. I don't know if I'll try it again or not, but probably not. I wasn't much impressed. If I want to play video games, I'll play on pogo.com where I can at least earn tokens to cash in for a chance to win real money and other prizes (I haven't won anything yet though).

What do you think of the Wii? If you bought one, do you still use it 6 months later?
