6 Things We Learned This Week 26 of 2011 (GPS, charity, symbols, books)

Symbols

I learned from Kristin-the Goat at her post entitled POTD-Reality Check this week that there is a hurricane symbol. It is on this sign. She was very nice about letting me use this picture from her post.  Did you know that was the symbol for a hurricane?

Dogs

I found out from Jabblog's comment on our post, Thanks, Abby--Now We Are Lost, that some dogs wear a GPS, primarily hunting dogs, but she recommended one for Abby!

Lending Money

Because I was high commenter over at Red Pine Mountain in June, Mountain Woman gave me a $25 gift certificate to use at Kiva.com to loan to someone who is struggling that can't get a bank loan. I used it for Jose, a farmer in El Salvadore with a home and three children, to use for farm supplies to help him get better crops. I chose a farmer since the gift came from Mountain Woman who has a farm in Vermont. There are many categories from which to choose. Thanks, Mountain Woman, for introducing me to this site.  I am excited about this and wrote a whole post about it over at my "Always Looking Up" blog:  "Lending to the Poor and Feeling Good!"

Summer Reading

Hunger Games is on the Summer reading lists of high schools across the USA! It's a great book!

June Comments For Joni and Friends

We received 207 comments in June so will donate $104 to Joni and Friends which another donor will match! Yea! For July, we'll be donating 50 cents per comment to Heifer International. Thanks to all who take time to comment!

We Won--Congrats to Canine Lifeline

Thanks to all of you who voted and helped Canine Lifeline win the $1,000 donation from Pedigree over at www.dogtipper.com! Hurray! Woo Hoo! WOOF! WOOF!

A fragment (not necessarily something I learned this week):

Gerard got a new Bruins shirt since they won the Stanley Cup. He is so proud of it and I think it looks really great on him!

Thanks, Abby--Now We Are Lost!

Saturday morning the temperature was cool, my favorite for long walks. Karen stayed home to be at the computer while Gerard and I went for a walk before breakfast. I was feeling especially adventuresome and led the way across to the other side of W. 54 where we don't usually go. It was so much fun going down new streets we never went on before, but then it was time to go home and we didn't know hot to get back. These were curvy streets and not laid out in nice squares like on the other side of W. 54.

Gerard called Karen on his cell phone and asked her to come get us. He told her we were on Brookmere Dr. That was a new street to Karen too, but she used the GPS and came for us with the car.  The GPS didn't list that street in Parma--we were in Parma Heights! Then, she used the GPS to find our way back home because she wasn't sure exactly how to go either.

It was a very fun way to start off Abby Day!  (Every Saturday is Abby day at our house.)  Do you get lost on walks?  I hope you can always find your way back home! Do you let your dog lead or do you lead the way?  I love being the leader!  Woof!  Woof!

6 Things I Learned In Week 14 of 2009

Child Tracking System

I first learned that parents can get a child location GPS tracking system when I read about it at For Your Protection. It is available through a company called Amber Alert GPS. By having your child take a tiny gadget with them, it will let you know their location where ever they go, providing they do actually keep it with them. For Your Protection is a great blog that I highly recommend. It has a wealth of good information about protecting your family and your home. I just discovered it this week through Entrecard.

Puzzles

I found a resource for puzzles for kids this week at www.akidsheart.com where I printed out an Easter puzzle to use for my Sunday School class. It also had word searches and puzzles for the Jewish holidays too.

Resurrection Buns

The 5th & 6th graders made these in Sunday School last week and they really taste good! Even I made a couple!! Here are the steps:
1--Get Pillsbury brand Grands Biscuits
2--flatten chunks of dough to a 5" diameter circle (represents the tomb)
3--brush on some melted butter, sprinkle some cinnamon & sugar (represents spices)
4--put a big marshmallow in the middle (represents Christ's body)
5--Fold the marshmallow up in the dough and pinch closed
6--spread melted butter and cinnamon on outside and place upside down on cookie sheet
7--bake 10-12 minutes at temperature on instructions of package
The marshmallow disappears, just like Christ's body when he rose from the dead. They really taste good too!

Blogging Better

Through The Divine Miss Mommy blog I came across a post telling about how she is participating in an offer from Pro Blogger giving free tips and assignments for improving your blog. I went right over to sign up for this free tutorial from one of the best!

Shirts

At Beth and Cory's Mom blog I found out there's a site where you can design your own shirt! At VistaPrint you can customize your own t-shirt for under $10!

The story about getting my cat, Manny, is up on the cat/dog blog today. He wanted me to be sure to let my readers on here know about it.
