A Food I Abhor (writer’s workshop)

The food I abhor fills the house with a bad smell. (Not my house though because I would NEVER have it in MY house!) It looks off-white and is stringy. My mom used to love it but was the only one in our family who did. She usually only made it at New Year’s. It’s a German dish. Can you guess what it is? It’s Sauerkraut. What food do you abhor? Do you dislike Sauerkraut too?

This post is inspired by Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompt: “Describe a food you abhor.”

Hmm. A food I abhor. I guess my vote would go to brussels sprouts, mostly because they always seem overcooked and smelly. Plus when you grow them in the garden you seem to have to pick nasty little worms off them. It seems one should be able to control those things, yet it isn't worth the bother to me.

I got a kick out of this post. I remember you saying once before that you hated sauerkraut. I like it a lot! As a kid, I despised it, especially the smell, but now I eat it (although I only get it once in a while). My food tastes have changed a lot since I've gotten older. I dislike breads and pastries and prefer green vegetables. Oh if only my parents could have foreseen! I was harshly punished for not eating my vegetables as a kid. How ironic.

There is a kind that is sweet. I don't like that. I do like sour sauerkraut with hot dogs.

I've never had sauerkraut and doubt I ever will. Luckily it wasn't a dish served in our family!

I love sauerkraut. A lot, and I'm a big fan of German food. My mother used to make and can sauerkraut when I was growing up. So, I've been raised eating sauerkraut.

I can't think of a food I abhor though. Some I like better than others, but can't think of one that I abhor.

Have a terrific day. :)

As someone with Lithuanian and German ancestry, there is this rule: eat sauerkraut or die! Only kidding, but fortunately, I happen to love the stuff. Liver and onions on the other hand--barf! My dad insisted that it was good for us. I quickly decided that it was good for the cat and slipped it under the table to him.

My Mommeh says she likes it on hotdogs, even though it does smell kind of bad.

Eewwuu...I don't like sauerkraut either. I think it's the smell..and if it smells funky, I won't eat it. I've actually had sauerkraut when I was in Germany, didn't like the taste either. Hmm., for me, it would be chunky tomatoes. It's strange, I know..but it's chunky tomatoes. If it's diced find in salsa or pureed, it's fine. That's the only thing I can think of that I don't like at all. No wait, one more thing, prepackaged mac and cheese with the powdered cheese stuff. The smell is really yucky :( :(

Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

I've never had sauerkraut because the smell alone turns me off!

I hate sauerkraut too! It looks, smells, and (I imagine) tastes awful! I would never have it in the house either. Bleck!

I love sauerkraut, but only with bratwurst or spareribs in the crockpot. Now you've gone and gotten my mouth a watering!
