6 Grocery Shopping Tips For Speed And Efficiency

Here are grocery shopping tips that we use when we shop:

1. Use A checklist and have the items listed in order that you get them in the store. When we do our grocery shopping, we take along a list but just use it to check at the end to be sure we didn't forget anything. I have a list of our usual items on the computer that we just print out and use it as a checklist each week. By putting the items in order according to where they are in the store will save time if you follow your list along the way.

2. Eat before you do your food shopping. We always do our grocery shopping on Saturday after we had a big breakfast at Hometown Buffet. It helps us stick to our list.

3. Go together but split up the list. To save time, we go together but then we split up in the store. We each get the items that we generally eat. I have the cart and Gerard brings things to it. The other option that we have done was to just tear the list in half and each get their half and meet in the middle. This works assuming your list is in order as suggested in item 1 above.

4. When loading the cart, put heavy things in the far end. By doing this, when unloading it, the heavy things will be going on first so they do not crush into the lighter items.

5. Help bag. This is really a no-brainer, especially if there is not a bagger and just the cashier.

6. Use some boxes in your car for the bags of groceries. This will keep things from toppling over and falling out of the bags.

We took this little quiz to see what kind of shoppers we were and here is the results:

We Are Quick Shoppers

You're a speedy shopper and a speedy cook. You value efficiency above all else.

You don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen... or in the grocery store!

You buy a lot of convenience foods, and you've got making quick meals at home down to a science.

You know what's cheap, healthy, and easy. You don't need a lot of fuss to eat well.

Why not take the quiz yourself and share your results in the comments?  Just click the link below.

Mountain Man does all the grocery shopping now because he does all the cooking. I must admit in my shopping days, I loved to wander and look at new things. I especially loved the tip about having boxes in the back so bags don't roll! I got the same result as you on the quiz!

I saw your video about making grilled cheese in microwave! You've definitely got your cooking down to a science!

Well, I would love to go shopping with you. GoodGuy does our grocery shopping and he's not quick. In the days when I shopped, cooked and fed seven people, I could buy groceries for two weeks in one organized trip. I gladly turn that job over to him.

You Are a Healthy Shopper

You love to shop for the healthiest and freshest food possible. You are very aware of what you put in your body.

You prefer to cook at home - that way you know exactly what is going into every meal you cook.

You stay away from prepared and overly processed foods. And you go organic and natural whenever possible.

Eating healthy is not a chore for you. You know how to make the healthiest meals taste great!

Great list of to-dos.

Have a terrific day. :)

My husband does our grocery shopping since he does the cooking and, well, because I just hate to go to the grocery store! I do go occasionally, okay, very rarely and will get things and bring them to the cart while he's in the produce section or something just because I want to speed up the process and get the heck out of there!

Our mom made a list of all of the commonly purchased groceries that she keeps on a spreadsheet and prints it out every week and checks off the items she needs. There are spaces for "other" for any different things to add. Then she gives the list to our dad and he gets the groceries!

OK, you talked me into it. It says I'm a healthy shopper. Mostly just because that's what I like to eat.

Mountain Woman:
Makes sense for Mountain Man to do his own shopping since he does the cooking. You sure got a keeper there! I was pretty impressed that Gerard thought of using the boxes. We both like to get and get out quick so don't really wander around. Thanks for taking the time to do the quiz. I just think they're kind of fun. Tomorrow Spunky Doodle will tell you why she likes grocery day.

I see you like the eggs from all those chickens. I was wondering if you actually kill any of your chickens to eat them. I could never do that. (Here is Mountain Woman's response: Oh, no!!!! We never kill the chickens. I couldn't bear the thought of killing anything and Mountain Man doesn't hunt or like to kill either. They are for eggs only and when they stop laying, they can have a retirement home here. I used to like to wander grocery stores but I don't like shopping otherwise.)

Rebecca:
Thanks for taking the time to watch it. Thanks for stopping by. I saw your little doggie with the dog food post this morning. My brother's dog died from that contaminated food. Very sad!

Ann in the Up:
Ann,
We have so little time together that we actually enjoy sharing this task and going together.
My dad used to do his shopping until he couldn't drive anymore. Talk about slow--it would take him like two-three hours. He was just glad he could do it.

Sandee,
Congrats on being a healthy shopper! Good for you. Thanks for including your results. I enjoy seeing different ones.

Beaded Tail:
Another husband who does the cooking! I find this very interesting. I like that you help though when you do go.

Daisy:
I am happy to see your mom is so organized too! That's nice your dad takes care of actually doing the shopping.

Sharkbytes: Thanks for taking the little quiz and congrats on being a healthy shopper! Very good!

I really like #4 and #6. I had never thought about putting the heavy things together in the front. I usually try to keep the cold, frozen things together--so they bag those together.

Keeping boxes in the trunk would make carrying in SO much easier!! Thanks for that tip--I am going to use that one!
