9 Things I Learned This Week #90 (blogging, cancer, grubs, water, cleaning, texting)

Over 40

When visited They Say Everyone Has A Story last Friday, I found that Bloggers over 40 can link up at Never Growing Old each week to hop around to visit others who are over 40 and blogging too. Just what I need, more blogs to visit and another thing to link up to!

Breast Cancer Research

Thanks to Mama Kat I learned about Army of Women that is a group of women volunteering to join with scientists in breast cancer research studies. Their goal is to recruit one million women. Go sign up and spread the word!

We Got Grubs? What About You?

I learned how to check for grubs in our yard from Lin from Duck and Wheel in this comment she left on "Did You Ever Have This Yard Problem?": "To test for grubs in any season, just grab a handful of grass and give a tug--like you are lifting a toupee off an old geezers head. If it is grubs, your lawn will lift up."

Hot Water

At Jodi's Journey's Heart Attacks and Hot Water post I learned that after eating it's best to drink hot soup or hot water. Cold water solidifies the oily stuff you just ate and slows down digesting.

Dirty Lunchboxes

My husband's lunch box always gets dirty. It looks disgusting so I was happy to find How to Clean Dirty Lunchboxes over at MaryKayTheBlog. Just throw them in the washer! I still take a sack lunch but use the same brown lunch bag all week long.

Internet Explorer Trouble

Thanks to Beaded Tail, I realized this blog wasn't loading in IE--YIKES! I have no clue why but thanks to the tip from Rebecca at The Older Geek, I moved my blog roll over to the far right near the bottom since it seemed to stop loading when it got that far. I don't like it way down there out of sight, but if it means IE users can read my blog again, then it's worth it. I do have a very long blog roll because I use it every day to visit my favorite blogs and I have A Lot.

Back Up Your Blog

Over at Design It Chic is a post showing an easy way to back up your blog including widgets and everything up to 1,000 posts. I haven't tried it yet, but maybe I should, just to see how it works.

Texting While Driving

From the Greater Cleveland Safety Council newsletter I learned that according to a 2009 National Organizations for Youth Safety and the Allstate Foundation survey, Even though it was proven more dangerous than driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 68% of teens admit to texting while driving. According to another 2009 study by Car and Driver Magazine, when legally drunk, add four feet to response time; when texting, add 70 feet.

Insert A Map

I commented about a map in a post over at My Name's Amiko that I wondered how she did that so she left me a comment with the instructions which I thought I'd share with you:
For the map. Go to http://maps.google.com and click Get Direction at the left top.
Put your cursor at the place you want, click right on image and click Direction from here.
Then put your cursor to another place you want and click right on that image, Direction to here.
Automatically google will draw a line.
Try it, it's so simple. If you want to put it on your blog, click LINK at the right top.
I tried putting in a sample here, but it wouldn't load, hmpf.

See more Friday Fragments and link up your own!

No more blogs for me. I have too many on my plate as it is. I'm so busy with animals and once again happily reading books.

One of the benefits to having poultry running around is that they eat grubs and all kinds of critters.

Thanks for the info on IE and backing up our blogs.

As to texting and driving, Vermont just made it illegal thank goodness.

Thanks for the Women's Army link! I just signed up, and I'm going to email it to my buddies. I love learning new things from blogland.

I just saw an interesting article on how banning texting while driving is actually leading to more text-related accidents, because instead of stopping the practice people are just holding their phones lower down in the car and taking their eyes even further from the road.

Have a great weekend!

I have learned a few things here, and since my blogroll is doing something weird I will definitely check out some of the links.

I am so glad you found 40 and over. I never try to do them all at once I visit a few each week!
The texting and driving is so crazy and I must confess I have been guilty..but no more. I use my blue tooth to talk on the phone but will never drive and text again(cause I scared myself and I am very lucky to be here and old enough to have known better).
Have a great weekend!

when texting ?? maybe they should add a bus ticket because their license should be revoked, maybe they should just walk to the ER since they will be going there soon anyway, maybe they should just bang their heads on the lamp post they are about to hit, maybe they should just jump off the cliff ... texting while driving is the dumbest thing

So glad your blog is fixed and I can see it again!

We have a state law here banning cell phones and texting while driving. I'm not sure how it's working because we still see people on the phone but not near as many as before.

THANKS for linking up my dirty lunchbox post!! I loved reading your list of things you learned--what a great idea!! I really need to check out backing up your blog...but, honestly? The idea of backing it up--or losing it without it being backed up--makes me weak in the knees! I am so NOT techno-savvy. :-)

What do you think about adding some more pictures? I don’t want to offend anyone, page is really nice. Just as I’ve heard visitors acquire information much more efficient if they see certain useful pics.
