75th D-Day Anniversary and June 6 Firmwide Jeans Day

Today, Thursday, June 6 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the D-day landings and the Battle of Normandy. 75 years ago, more than 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces came together as allies to liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. This year’s anniversary is a great reminder of our resolve and determination and the sacrifice that so many have made for our freedom. That freedom is so easy to take for granted, but is so important to everything we do and certainly has come at a great cost.

To honor and celebrate this anniversary, we all could wear jeans to work today and provided breakfast for us! Also, in recognition of our veterans, we were asked to consider making a contribution of up to $5 to help sponsor honor flights for veterans by supporting the Honor Flight Network. This national network is dedicated to transporting America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to honor their service and sacrifice for our country. Since its inception in 2005, the Honor Flight Network has transported more than 200,000 veterans to D.C and currently has a national waiting list topping 38,000.

The firm I work for will match the donations raised from our jeans day and will also make an additional donation to the Honor Flight Network. This contribution will help many veterans visit Washington, D.C. to see their memorials.

Thanks again to all of our veterans and to all the veterans we count among our family and friends for what you have done to protect and preserve the freedom of this nation.

What Kind of Meal Do You Get For 25 Cents?

For Cleveland's Foodbank Harvest For Hunger campaign, the donation slips they have at Giant Eagle say $1 provides 4 meals! I cannot imagine what those meals would be like. How can you have a meal for just 25 cents? Even a candy bar costs more than that! Does anyone know??? I am just curious. I know they get food from food pantries, but even so. It just seems unbelievable to me.

I found out this week that Dollar Bank will match donations to Harvest for Hunger that are made at their bank through the end of March. You may also mail a check or money order to:
Dollar Bank Harvest for Hunger
1301 E. 9th Street - 10th Floor

What kind of meal do you think you could make for 25 cents?

7 Friday Fragments (charities, dogs, fitness, TV, Google, Sports)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

Diabetes Research

You can now help fund Diabetes Research for free just by clicking on The Diabetes Site which is a new tab on the animal rescue site (among others). They also added a tab for Greater Good-your click will help send two girls to school for a year. The whole website has been redesigned and works faster now. Check it out!

Dog Age

Dog age translated to people years is not as simple as 1 dog year = 7 people years according to the Dog Owner's Manual published by Quirk Books posted at Dogster because the size of the dog also factors into it. According to their chart, Abby is 8 in dog years but 54 in people years.

Good Shape

When we had to evacuate our building at work this week, I learned I was in better shape than I thought. I wasn't winded, my knees, legs and hips all worked well without any pain and no stiffness or pain the next day either after walking down 29 flights of stairs! (For more details, see my post: Your Attention Please.)

The Biggest Loser

I am so happy to see Danni in the final 3 because she started out so badly and changed dramatically. She really looks good now and has a great attitude too. She stuck with Jiliian all the way through and developed a bond of friendship with her. For several weeks, she was the only one on her team and kept having big enough losses to beat the other two teams. She was also good in the challenges and I'm pulling for her! The audience can vote this week for the third finalist between Jackson and Joe and nbc.com (I voted for Joe.)

The Bible Mini Series

This week in "The Bible" mini series on the History channel, it was quite an exciting week with the prophets and kings and battles against the Philistines. I think my favorite scene was the battle of Jericho. I liked the actor who played King David but didn't like that Nathan didn't tell David the parable when confronting him about his sin with Bathsheba like it's recorded in the scripture. I liked David's reaction to the parable. What did you think of it?

Google Reader

Thanks to a couple of my Facebook friends, I just saw that the Google Reader RSS feed will be gone as of July 1! Although I do not use this a lot, I do use it some and have it available on my blog. This is what bugs me about technology--it's constantly changing! I already feel like I'm behind the times again, not having a tablet, iphone or even a clue as to how either works or how to use one. Guess there are alternatives according to "8 Google Reader Alternatives That Will Ease Your RSS Pain."   In Transitioning from Google Reader to Feedly, it says if you give Feedly a try before July 1, "you'll be able to migrate seamlesly."  I remember a time when this news would not have bothered me one little bit!

UPDATE 3/16/13:
I just realized, I don't ever use Google reader.  I use the Blogger reader (thought it was the same thing but it's not).  Yea!  I noticed there was a link on the right of my feeds that says "view in Google reader."  That's when I finally got a clue that I don't use Google reader.  Ha, ha.

Sports

I'm really liking the additions the Browns and Indians have made to their teams. I'm actually excited about the Indians this year, so far! The College Basketball March Madness tournament bracket is announced Sunday. Still deciding if I want to enter one at work or not. It's like throwing away $10, but it's fun being in it the first couple days.

7 Friday Fragments (news, gifts, plumpy'nut, Bible)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

plumpy'nut

A child dies every 15 seconds from hunger and related causes, but World Vision is using plumy'nut (a high-protein paste resembling peanut butter) to save starving children. Your gift to help save starving children is multiplied 5 times thanks to grant funds. Watch this video to see how pumpy'nut and antibiotics saved Sabiou:

Musical Chairs

According to ESPN the Magazine, there is a musical chairs championship which had 1,200 participants!

Popes

I never knew a Pope could resign, did you?

Reporters

I think those CNN reporters who stood outside in blizzard conditions deserve a bonus!

Babies

Babies being born are at the lowest level since 1920 according to USA TODAY. Who will support the elderly population?

Valentine's Day

I was really surprised when I got this cute candy special delivery car on WEDNESDAY! I was so happy it wasn't flowers! It has chocolate covered pretzels, white frosted tiny pretzels with sprinkles, gummy hearts and individually wrapped chocolate hearts with a cute dog. We exchanged cards on Thursday and my sweet husband even had the pets give me cards. It's so cute, I love when he does things like that!  Got a cold on Valentine's Day again--had a bad cold our first Valentine's Day too!

Old Age

I've really enjoyed reading the book of Ecclesiastes these last couple weeks. For a good description of old age, read Ecclesiastes 11 12.  (Sorry about that. It's the first 5 verses of Chapter 12.)

4 Friday Fragments (Malawi, Google, snow, boots)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

Malawi

We were notified that our Operation Christmas Child box was sent to Malawi.  I never heard of this place but it's in Africa.  Forty-five percent of Malawi’s 16.3 million people are 14-years-old or younger.

Now the urgent need is to provide the volunteers and follow-up material to teach the children to become faithful followers of Jesus.

We Got Snow!

We were blasted with snow on Wednesday. Gerard is off all week but I had to go to work. I was surprised when the office closed at 2:00 p.m. and we were told we could go home! Usually, downtown is like a parking lot when a snow storm hits, but today the traffic was light and we moved along pretty good. It was great getting home before dark! Gerard wore his new boots today and was amazed that his socks were dry after walking Abby in 3-4" of snow and shoveling the drive.

Cats and Google

Cats are the most popular animal on Google! According to the Freekibble site, When you google "cat", you'll get more than 2.4 billion "results"... almost double any other animal!

Old Boots

When I got to work yesterday, my socks were all wet. Then I looked at my boots and no wonder! The sole was all cracked. Guess it's time for new boots. Fortunately, I had an extra pair of socks at work for just a time as this. I have more to tell about this, but will make a whole post about it.

8 Friday Fragments Pretty Late

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

Comforting Newtown, CT

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the shooting at the elementary school in Newtown, CT like everyone else was. I couldn't even watch the news about it because it is just too upsetting to me. I was in a funk for several days as it was. A friend from church shared the following:

The USPS has set up a dedicated P.O. box at if you want to send them a note of comfort or encouragement:

Messages of Condolence for Newtown
PO Box 3700
Newtown CT 06470

or

Newtown School District
4 Fairfield Circle South
Newtown CT 06470

Cutest Christmas Story Video

Check out Lin's post at Duck and Wheel with String called "It's Almost Better Than Charlie Brown."

World Vision

I just discovered this week that World Vision meets many different needs worldwide. I always just thought they were all about providing food to the hungry but they do way more than just that. I experienced so much joy in helping others through donating while making gifts in honor of some of my friends and co-workers. See my Advent Conspiracy post if you missed it.

Mary Connealy

I discovered a new author this month that I like a lot! She writes clean western romance novels with humor. I loved The Kincaid Brides series of three books set in the 1800s.  My review of the last one of the series, Over the Edge, will be up on Grab A Book From Our Stack tomorrow or Sunday.

Survivor Philippines

I enjoyed "Survivor" this season and liked all the final three. I didn't know who would win, but glad glad Denise won. I thought she really did play the best game. She was definitely an underdog with her tribe losing all their challenges at the beginning. I was also happy that Lisa won the fan vote for a nice amount of money too. I didn't like her character on "Facts of Life", Blair, but I did like her in real life. Did you watch?

Nature's Miracle

I tried getting out an old stain on our upstairs carpet with Nature's Miracle on a co-worker's recommendation, but the stain is still there. I think it's a little lighter but it may be hopeless since I tried other stuff on it first.

Snow

Well, the snow came here to Parma. Downtown after work, the wind almost blew me into the street! I had to hang on to a pole at one point to keep from being blown away. My bus came late this morning and coming home it took me an hour and a half to get to my bus stop, but then about 10 more minutes to brush the snow off my van (normal is 45-50 minutes). I hope everyone who wanted snow for Christmas is happy now.

Amazon Gift Card

Image from Amazon

My pets are very happy I got an Amazon Gift card for my birthday because now I will order Snoopy's Mischief Master Class book written by dogs, two cats and a turtle (all who blog)!

Advent Conspiracy: Something To Think About

Our Pastor has been speaking about phases of Advent Conspiracy (worship fully, spend less, give more and love all. This video below really spoke to my heart. Every Christmas for years now I've always given an extra offering to my church as unto Jesus as a gift to Him since it is His birthday I celebrate at Christmas. I generally make it equal to or more than what I spend on the person I gave the most to. This year, after viewing this video, I'm doing it a bit differently.

I decided to give through World Vision this year to help make a difference in the world the way Jesus did when He lived on Earth. There are plenty options to help the poor, feed the hungry, provide care and help to people in crisis, provide medicine, clean water, help for orphans and widows and even animals to help people support themselves, plus more! To view all the "gifts" check out www.worldvision.org.  Is Jesus the most important person on your list?  Does your checkbook/credit card statement reflect it?

You can make a donation in honor of anyone you want and they will get a card and/or email card notifying them that you made a donation in their honor and what gift you gave. I wasn't too sure how this would be received, so I started with a couple of our pastors (before I realized I could send them an email notification but they'll hopefully get a card in the mail.)

Have you heard of the Advent Conspiracy before? This is the first year I've heard of it. What do you think?

Thanks For Commenting!

We enjoy reading all the comments we receive on our blogs and had 230 during November so we will donate $115 to the Cleveland City Mission, which was our charity for November.  With Christmas shopping and all the extra expenses related to the holidays, we will not be donating to charity based on our blog comments.  I am also considering cutting back on blogging for the month of December so probably will not post as often on this blog.

We are going to try to cut back on our charitable giving next year to practice what our budget would look like if we had only one salary coming in; therefore, we will not continue to make charitable contributions based on blog comments next year.  I doubt if this will have any impact at all on the amount of comments we receive.  Never fear though because this month Beth Ann at It's Just Life is donating money based on the number of comments she gets to Josh's Yolka Project which helps orphanages in Russia.  I hope you will visit her blog.  This really sounds like a wonderful project and 100% of donations go to the orphanages!

I feel very good about our giving but really need to narrow the field.  It's hard to choose just a few organization to support because the need is so great and there are so many wonderful non-profit organizations out there.

It's Time For Operation Christmas Child by Spunky

Spunky Doodle helps

Every year around this time my mom brings home lots of stuff and packs them into a shoebox that will be sent to a child who doesn't get much for Christmas, usually a foreign country. I am helping inspect the items and making sure she doesn't send anything I want.

Spunky inspects all the items

We would like it if you would join us in this project by going to the Operation Christmas Child page of Samaritan's Purse where you can print a label for your box to designate if it is for a boy or girl and what age range. You can pay $7 for shipping it online and get your barcoded label to attach to your box and look for a drop off location nearby. Many churches participate in this including ours so my mom and dad just take our box there.

Thanks For Commenting--Charities Benefit

During October, we will donate $135 to the National Children's Cancer Society because of the 271 comments we received.  Why not click on the links and make a donation of your own?

Serving a meal to the Homeless

For the month of November, we will donate 50 cents per legitimate comment that we receive to the Cleveland City Mission.  This organization helps many people in our city through many different programs and has served the Cleveland community over 100 years!  They reach out to the poor, the homeless, battered women, children and youth.  They provide shelter, food, clothing in Christ's name and share the gospel with them.  Many lives have been transformed through the ministry of the City Mission thanks to lots of volunteers and financial support from individuals.  I had the opportunity to go and help serve a meal to the homeless which was a wonderful experience!  Check out my post about it by clicking the link.

We are only going to do this until the end of this year because we just have to cut back somewhere.  We will certainly continue giving to charity, just not based on comments on our blog.  We hope though by doing this, we introduced you to some charities that you may not have been aware of.

We are pleased to announce the our blog comments for August and September totaled 413 which means we will donate $206 to Best Friends Animal Society whose goal is no more homeless pets.  Our pets are very happy about this as you can see:

There's no place like home!
Wish all cats had a good home like I do!

Project Pink--Go Vote!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.

Have you heard yet about Project Pink?  PUMA's Project Pink is giving up to $125,000 towards cancer research to a cancer charity receiving the most votes in their contest. Voting is easy, even I did it!  There are many cancer charities from which to choose.  (I voted for Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation--Act With Love because I get regular emails from "The Army of Women" and they are the ones who told me about this.)

Go vote--just a few easy steps:
1.  Submit your email to register for voting.
2.  Enter some basic information.
3.  Browse the gallery or search for who you wish to vote for.
4.  Vote!

Shop Project Pink gear and tweet with #projectpink to make the donation pot even bigger. The winning charity receive 100% of the profits from the sale of Project Pink, plus $1 ever time someone tweets with #projectpink. So tweet, shop, vote and do good. All in all, the donation could be worth up to $120,000! And the entire collection is super cute!

So, get on over to the polls and VOTE NOW!  Supporters may vote once a day for their choice charity until the contest's conclusion on Friday, October 5th, 2012

5 Friday Fragments

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:
  1. Funny Jokes

I found the funniest post of the week with funny jokes about children and teachers at Wrestling With Retirement's Saturday Silliness post. It's worth checking out if you want a laugh.

  2. National Doughnut Day

Today is National Doughnut Day--are you participating by eating one?
  3. Indians Game

I went to the Indians 12:05 game Tuesday--a beautiful day for baseball! I was surprised to learn that out Designated Hitter--Johnny Damon only had a .152 average. That's pathetic; however, he did get on base. I'll be posting about it this coming week showing you a tip for making a visor to keep the sun out of your eyes.
  4. It's a Zork!

On my trip to Amish country, I saw a zork. Have you ever seen one? Do you even know what it is? Here is a picture of the one I saw. It's a mix between a horse and a zebra, looks like a horse, but has some black stripes like a zebra. I had three posts about my trip last week, just couldn't get everything into one post.
  5. Comments for Charity

For May, 50 cents per legitimate comment goes to Joni and Friends for family retreat scholarships for those having special needs children. We had 191 comments in May. Thanks to those who commented on our blogs we will donate $96. Our charity for June and July will the The Wounded Warrior Project which helps thousands of wounded warriors and their families as they return home from current conflicts.

Comment For Charity

Thanks to getting 192 comments our our blogs during April, we will donate $81 to The Paralyzed Veterans of America.

For the merry month of May, the charity will be Joni & Friends to go for family camp scholarships. This is a camp run by Joni & Friends for special needs children who attend with their families. Here is a blurb about it from their website:
For families that live with disability, here’s a week of spiritual refreshment along with action-packed, accessible activities. Grow in Christ, strengthen family bonds, and build friendships with others on the same journey.
Perhaps you would like to make a donation of your own!

(50 cents per legitimate comment during May goes to Joni and Friends for family retreat scholarships for those having special needs children.)

5 Things We Learned This Week 15 of 2012 (charity, ants, safety, MLB)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. We like to share what we've learned each week.
  1. Comments For Charity

The total comments for March on our blogs was 216 so we donated $108 to The American Cancer Society, split between Louise at Country Pictures and Mrs. 4444 and her Difference Makers at Half-Past Kissin' Time. For April, our charity is the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
  2. Ants

Over at Modern Mom, I found out ants hate coffee. She suggests putting dry coffee grounds in a paper bag on your counters and in cupboards where you found ants and could also spread some around the perimeter of your house to keep them away.
  3. Crime Prevention

I attended a Street Smart Crime Prevention at work and learned several things regarding personal safety, one of which was not to walk and read at the same time which I used to do every day on my breaks and at lunch. I posted my notes on this blog in case you missed them, here are the links: Part 1, Part 2.
  4. Orange and April

I learned this week that April is Animal Cruelty Awareness month and the color to wear is orange to show your support. (Kind of like pink for breast cancer.) You can donate to the American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to support this cause.
  5. Longest Opener

The Cleveland Indians lost to the Royals  Toronto Blue Jays in their home opener thanks to a blown save in the 9th that launched the game into 16 innings, the longest opener in the history of major league baseball. “I feel terrible,” said Perez. “Everyone did their job today but me.” This makes four losses in a row for Cleveland home openers. Oh, and out of the 16 innings, the Indians only scored in one of them. On a brighter note, they had a pretty good season last year so I'm still optimistic. It was cold too, not good baseball weather. I felt sorry for the players and the fans who went. See: Wrong Side of History--Indians Lose Longest Opening Day Game.
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE--HOPE YOU ALL ATTEND A CHURCH THIS SUNDAY TO CELEBRATE JESUS CHRIST'S RESURRECTION  AND OUR NEW LIFE IN HIM!

Have some marshmallow eggs too--they are my favorite Easter candy!

(50 cents per legitimate comment during April goes to Paralyzed Veterans of America--maybe next month will be ASPCA.)

Thank You All Who Commented for KIVA!

Wow! January was our highest month for comments since we’ve been donating to charity based on our blog comments with 282 ($141) thanks to our posts about Abby’s attack and recovery. Thanks to all who commented, we were able to help all these people with loans through KIVA as a result:

Ali-Lebanon-Construction
Kalbubu-Kyrgyzstan-Livestock
Faaiuga-Samoa-Farming
Evans-Kenya-water distribution
Ricardo-El Salvadore-Pizza catering
Since February is Cat Appreciation month, our charity for February is Caroline’s Kids Pet Rescue, no-kill sanctuary for cats. It’s a house with LOTS of cats everywhere in rooms, but not cages! Unlike regular shelters, this is a sanctuary that takes in old, feral and even cats with feline HIV to let them live out their lives in a safe place with love. They also have adoptable cats too! Here's the video I took when I visited:

Comment For Charity: The Cleveland Pregnancy Center

For November, we donated 50 cents per legitimate comment on all our blogs to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude's Children's Hospital is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.  We had 238 comments which translated into a $119 donation!  Thank you all who took time to comment!

After hearing about all the services provided and seeing the 180 movie about abortion, the charity I chose this month is The Cleveland Pregnancy Center. During December, we will donate 50 cents per legitimate comment on all our blogs to The Cleveland Pregnancy Center which saves lives by helping mothers out so they can keep their babies or provide them with alternatives to abortion.

Here is the powerful 180 movie that I took time to watch even though it's 33 minutes long. It's worth the time and gives a person a lot to think about! I hope you will watch it if you haven't seen it yet.

We hope you will visit all our blogs and comment away (our tabs at top will take you there).

Who Knew You Could Fit So Much In A Shoebox?

It's time for Operation Christmas Child again! It's the project through Samaritan's Purse that gets a gift to children living in poverty areas worldwide. Samaritan's Purse was started by Franklin Graham, son of the evangelist, Billy Graham. Franklin's autobiography, Rebel With a Cause tells about its beginnings and what a story it is! Anyhow, this year we got a box together for a boy age 10-14. Every year I misjudge the amount of items that can fit in the shoebox. On my first trip to Marc's, I was a bit short so went shopping at Dollar Store for a few more items and fit everything in except one washcloth. Here is the list of everything we fit in our little shoe box:

1 Broncos football jersey
3 white t-shirts
1 pair of sox
1 bag of balloons (hey, they're fun!)
1 Nerf ball
 1 toothbrush
1 Colgate toothpaste
2 washcloths
3 packs of gum
1 pen
1 notepad
1 cute rubber lizard
1 bag of Skittles (can't send chocolate)

Our church is a collection location and participates in this project every year.  Last year our small Adult Bible Fellowship (Adult Sunday School class) all worked together to pack boxes which was a fun project!  Here's is the link to the Operation Christmas Child page where you can learn more and participate too!  If you donate the $7 for postage online, you get a barcoded label for your box that they can track to let you know where your box went.

5 Things We Learned This Week 45 of 2011 (cats; blogging; Paterno; Pregnancy)

Brushing Cat's Teeth

To protect your cat's health and save a lot of money and worry, it's a good idea to brush your cat's teeth every day. Easier said than done, but here is a link to a video that gives a strategy for getting started: Brushing Your Cat's Teeth. I think it's definitely worth a try.

Popular Posts

I noticed that although the comments on my posts may be low, sometimes lots of people looked at it. It's easy to see now with the new view of the Blogger post list. Sometimes I feel a bit discouraged when I don't see many comments, but when I saw this I realized that people are reading my blog, just not commenting which is okay. My popular post widget though is based on comments. I am wondering it it should be based on page views instead; what do you think?

Parker hopes you will adopt one too!

Parker Adopted!

Parker, the black cat I featured on Rescue Me In Memory of Grampa J to participated in Mayzie's Remembrance of their Grampa J was adopted from Kitten Krazy so I put up another black cat!

Joe Paterno

After so many years of coaching Penn State and being the winningest college coach ever, Joe Paterno got fired! What a sad end to his legacy. At least now Tressel and Ohio State are not the top news in college football anymore.

The Cleveland Pregnancy Center

The Cleveland Pregnancy Center offers many kinds of assistance to the pregnant, parents, and post-abortive individuals and families including spiritual counseling. They offer free and confidential pregnancy testing, free ultrasounds, material assistance, courses on infant development, childbirth and Bible Studies that focus on applying God's truths in His Word to every day living. They also provide a father's outreach program, including individual and group male mentoring. I plan to do a whole post about this.  They have a 24-hour help line 7 days a week:  1-800-395-4357.
