Who's Sending Me Flowers?

When I saw the flower delivery truck pull into my driveway, my first thought was who would be sending me pretty flowers?  My husband used to surprise me with flowers often, but once we got married, he realized I'd rather not spend our money on flowers that only last about a week.  Plus, Spunky Doodle, our cat used to chew on the leaves all the time and then throw up.  I didn't really think they were from him, but would have never been able to guess who they were from.  Want to take a guess?  They were from Sarah at Chewy!  Here is what the card said:

Losing such a big part of your family is never easy.  We're thinking of you in this difficult time.

Spunky Doodle

It was a very nice gesture but even more of a surprise since we didn't have any pet death recently.  Spunky Doodle had to be put down almost two years ago, September of 2021.  I don't know why they thought we recently lost a pet.  It had my name and address on it, so it wasn't just delivered to the wrong place.  But, thank you, Chewy anyway!  It was a nice surprise.  

Bear

Bear, our current cat, just sniffed at them a little bit and then walked away and left them alone.  I had them on the dining room table to get some morning sun while we were at church on Sunday, and then moved them up to my den for afternoon sun and closed the door just in case Bear jumped up on the table.  He generally doesn't go in there unless I am in there though.  He's such a good cat!

Here it is October and look how big these flowers are!  When we plant these kind in our yard, they barely get to be 7 inches high.

Weekend Wrap-Up!

Friday my husband bought flowers for our porch and for the front section in front of our porch.  The assortment this year includes geraniums, merigolds and snapdragons.  We usually have success with geraniums.  Our yard has so little sun, it's hard to find plants that do well.

I enjoy our front porch and think the flowers add a nice touch.  Saturday, my husband helped me make my Top 5 Wednesday--Summer Covers video (it will be uploaded to YouTube Tuesday) from this spot which turned out great.  This is the best lighting I've found so far to shoot videos so I plan to make some more from this spot.  Think I'll be hanging our our wind chime this week.

I spent some extra time at the library this weekend stocking up on books I want to use for my next few Booktube videos.  This is just some of the books we got!  Manny Boy is looking them over, wondering why all these books are cluttering up his table.

This is a picture of a house we saw in our neighborhood for sale for only $32,900!  The yard is quite large as you can see, but it terrible condition.  The house looks small but not too bad from the outside.  I wonder what the inside looks like.

I had a very nice Mother's day.  These are the three cards I got:  one from both my cats, one from my wonderful husband, and one from our dog.  Plus, the pets gave me a gift card for Cracker Barrel!  We had great weather, no rain as was predicted.  It was a very nice day!  What did you do over the weekend?

Time To Plant Our Flowers!

We don't need as many flowers this year because the bare circle in our front yard from when we removed our evergreen tree has shrunk so much that we planted grass in it this year. The only flowers we had to get were a few for the back and flower boxes and containers for the front porch. Gerard lets me pick them out and he does the planting while I take pictures and blog.

I love our purple phlox that comes back every spring. Unfortunately, some weeds have a stronghold in the one place and I can't get them out!  I tried thinning it out one year and transplanting some of it but it didn't work.  We planted our extra flowers in front of the fence at the end where the phlox stopped.

I decided to go with begonias this year. They are usually sturdy and last long into the year. We got a variety of colors because Gerard likes the different colors.












Here is a couple of our planters that are finished. Moe's garden is in the backyard and we'll show you that picture in Spunky Doodle's post tomorrow.

Of course, our dog, Abby, was the supervisor. She loves being outside with Gerard.

Gerard was so excited about the great weather and getting the flowers in that he also sprayed Weed-b-gon to get rid of the dandelions in our yard (hope it doesn't kill off all the grass and clover too or we'll have plain dirt). Then, he went to attack some of the weeds behind the garage!

Good job, Gerard!

Three Questions For You--What Do You Think?

 


(1)  A few houses down the street from us is a yard with these pretty purple flowers. Our next door neighbor also has some like them in her backyard but she couldn’t tell me what kind they were. Do you know?

(2)  Gerard and I played checkers July 4th weekend and normally he wins. We haven’t played in a long time though so he was a little rusty and made some bad moves. Our first game was a draw, he won the second game, and I won the third. I think though, that I really won the first game too because near the end he did not jump when he could have and moved a different piece instead. I said I get his man for not jumping, but then he took back his move and jumped then. What do you think? Once you move and your hand comes off the piece, can you take back that move? I think not, but Gerard thinks you can in this situation because the rule is you have to jump. (He just ignores that part about taking the piece for not jumping.)

3)  While walking Abby, I noticed the location of the flag on this house and wondered how they got it up there. Do you think they stood on a ladder on the porch and reached up? Or do you think they climbed out of that second floor window onto the roof and reached down? I just wonder.

The Planter Hunt

Saturday was sunny and in the 60s so we decided it would be a good day to plant some flowers. We took Abby along and Gerard walked around with her while I picked out flowers for our porch planters. I went with petunias and coleus. I did not choose yellow in the hopes we would get less bees.

We finally threw away our swan planters and while Gerard planted the flower box, I went to look for new animal planters. I was not picky, any animal would do but I did not find any. We checked at the nursery where we bought the flowers, at Target and WalMart. The good news is I was able to get two little plastic pots for just $5.00. I miss our swans. These pots look pathetic. We will be on the lookout for animal planters and hopefully by next spring, we will find some.

Our front circle keeps getting smaller and smaller every year. The grass is taking it over. Our back yard mostly has perennials now so we do not have to plant much back there.

I Got Flowers But Not From My Husband!

For Secretary’s Day or what has been renamed as Administrative Professionals Day, some flowers were delivered to me! At first I thought they must be from Gerard but he’s been very good about not wasting our money on cut flowers. They were actually from one of the attorneys I just started working for in March. I certainly wasn’t expecting anything from them since I’ve only been working for them less than two months, but it made me feel appreciated. She also gave me a very nice card.

The firm always does some special things for the support staff too during the week of Secretary’s Day. Tuesday, they gave us a super breakfast which included cheese stuffed French Toast, Kish, cut up fruit, bacon, sticky buns (yes, I gave in and had some—they were delicious!), yogurt and juice. We could even go back for seconds, which I did! I wasn’t hungry at all though at lunch time so just saved my pizza that I brought for the next day.

Why We Don't Have Flowers On Our Table

This is a fall flower arrangement of fake flowers that Gerard brought down from the top of the curio cabinet and put on our dining room table. I didn't say anything, but every day the cats would be chewing on it and pulling out the leaves and flowers. Of course when I got the camera out, Spunky got out of the flowers but she did have her whole head in a nice hole in the arrangement that she made by pulling some of the fake flowers out.

Manny liked them too and helped spunky Doodle slowly dismantle the arrangement a little at a time from the other side. Finally, when Gerard got a piece from under the table stuck in the vacuum cleaner (which is probably why the belt broke), I just put them back up on the curio cabinet where I had them before and explained why to Gerard. The cats enjoyed them for a couple weeks at least but I thought I better rescue the arrangement before it was all torn apart.

Can you have flowers out in your house? The cats would still like it on the table. What do you say I should do?

Sprucing Up The Yard For Spring

Gerard and I always like to get our yard looking nice after the long winter. Although Gerard does most of the yard work, he lets me choose the flowers to plant every year. This year I chose the blue Labella for our flower pots and swan planters.

For our front circles, we got petunias again since I thought they did so well last year. We got red, white and purple ones this year and Gerard planted them all because I still had a cold. Usually I'll at least dig the holes.

In the back we went with some perennials for Dickie Bird's garden. It's called silver mound.

I think and on the other side of our air conditioner, we planted something that is supposed to get some flowers on it during June but I don't remember the name of it. Do you know what these are called?

In the back, I trimmed our neighbor's tree that comes through our side of the fence and we planted coleus again in Moe's garden.

While Gerard planted them, I attacked the weeds that were growing behind our garage and got most of them out.


Gerard had fun trimming our front bush with the long clippers for the first time. Now all we have to do is sit back and watch our flowers grow bigger.

Yea For Spring!

One of the first signs of spring is when my crocuses come up. This is an early spring flower so that is why I planted these bulbs in my yard. Same with the daffodils in the back and some tulips and hacinths too. I love to see these poke up out of the ground breaking their way through the snow because then I know spring is really here. Below is a short poem that I made up and which illustrates why I am not a poet but thought you might enjoy it anyhow:
Spring
Spring is here,
It brings us cheer,
Spring is here!

This big rose arrangement was from my firm for my dad's funeral. I brought this one home because the red and white roses were so beautiful and it was such a big arrangement. Spunky Doodle liked hiding behind them and chewing on the leaves very much. We enjoyed them for a whole week. Our dining room table was the only place big enough for them.

Flower Planting Day--Yea!

Each year Gerard and I look forward to planting flowers in our yard. Before we were married, he always used to have great roses and pretty flowers, one of the best yards in his neighborhood! Planting flowers was new to me. This is something that I got into since knowing Gerard.

We like getting our flowers from Richardson's Greenhouse which is only about 15 minutes from our house. Not only do they have beautiful flowers and a huge selection, the they are very nice people who run it and they have a greeter--a friendly calico cat! He's about 16 years old now and lets the customers pet him. He usually just sits or lays near the cash register. That's another reason we like to go there.

Here's Gerard with our loaded wagon. We are getting Coletus, purple & white petunias, a geranium for the front porch and top soil. (Getting the dirt ready is Gerard's job too.) Then hanging plants are gorgeous, but since we took off our awning when we had the new roof put on, we have nowhere to hang one. We plan to buy the mulch from WalMart and do that tomorrow.

Gerard and I both enjoy doing this together, but he works much faster than I. He had the swans and the flower box all done by the time I came out after saying "hello" to our cats first and having some yogurt and a drink of water. He doesn't fuss around! I, of course, have final approval. Gerard put the coletus in the swan pots and petunias and coletus in the porch flower box. I told it should all be petunias in there, so he replaced the Coletus with petunias.

We both worked on planting the Coletus and Petunias in the flower bed in the front yard. I dig the holes and he plants the flowers. That way, we can work well together--he lets me do the arranging and he's the one who gets dirty.

We also planted some begonias and Coletus in the backyard. The begonias are near the house in our sunniest spot (called Dickie Bird's Garden because our bird is buried there) and the Coletus is by our Miracle Moe cat's grave in the back corner.
