Table Tennis Exhibition--Very Interesting!

I went to a Table Tennis exhibition at Parma Heights Baptist Church last weekend and learned several things I didn't know about it.  The main difference between Table Tennis and Ping Pong is the speed of the ball.  In Table Tennis at the Olympic level, the ball makes approximately 8,000 revolutions per minute as opposed to two or three in ping pong.  That is a huge difference!  Here is a list of some of the other facts I found interesting:

  • There are as many as eight different spins you can put on the ball.  They gave the spectators an opportunity to try to return the serve from one of the second top-ranked player in Ohio, Keith Pech.  Several tried and one was actually very good.  I didn't because I didn't want to make a fool of myself.
  • Table Tennis has passed up soccer as the number 1 sport with the most participants in the Olympics.
  • A game used to consist of 21 points, but it's been changed to 11 to make it more interesting to the spectators.
  • Another change is that instead of serving five balls in a row, it is now just two in a row.
  • Colleges now give scholarships for Table Tennis and the top ranked player who also is a Table Tennis Coach/Instructor charges $55 for an hour lesson but guarantees his students who take lessons from him four years will be able to get an $80,000 scholarship.
  • In singles, you can serve the ball anywhere on the table and from either corner.  He said you should serve from the left corner of the table if you are right handed so are in position to return the shot with a forehand stroke.
  • They can call time outs to dry their hands off and some players wipe them off on the table near the net.
  • Players at this level recover their paddles once a month.
  •  In tournament play, players must wear a shirt that is a different color from the ball.
  •  Every so often, the players switch sides like in tennis, but I don't remember how often they do that (I took notes in my head so I'm relying on my memory here).
  • To determine who serves, they do not p-i-n-g and hit the ball until someone misses.  Instead, they used one of these ways:  (1) flip a coin, (2) rock-paper-scissors, or (3) on player hides the ball in one hand and the other guesses which hand it is in.  If he guesses right, he gets to serve, if wrong, the player hiding the ball gets to serve.
  • A person burns approximately 700 calories an hour at this level of play (varies depending on weight).
It was an entertaining demonstration.  I really enjoyed it and regret that I didn't go to the actual tournament the next day for at least some of it.  It was fun watching these guys.

Hope you learned something by reading this post.  Now I feel like playing some ping pong.

This is just a short clip of their warm-up before they played a game.  See how far away from the table they are?  That's because the ball is moving so fast.

7 Friday Fragments (sports, marriage, photography, news)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. Here we go:

    U.S. Open

      Photograph: Timothy A Clary/AFP/Getty Images
    1. When watching the end of the final matches in the U.S. Open, I learned that the women and men champions (Serena Williams and Andy Murray) got $1.9 million dollars! Not bad pay for a few hours work, heh? But, these were both close matches with an extremely high level of play. I am happy for both of them--I like Serena Williams and it was Andy Murray's first U.S. open win so I say, "good for him." His match took just under 5 hours! Who says you don't have to be in good shape to play tennis? You sure do to play at the pro level!
    2. Cleveland Browns

    3. Spunky curled up in the Brown Chair
From a Browns tweet, I learned the the Browns was the only team to open the season with a rookie Quarterback, Running Back and Wide Receiver. I guess I should be happy they actually had the lead for part of the game and only lost it in the last few minutes . . . yet again. I wouldn't have felt so bad if they weren't so close to winning it. Our defense played well, putting the Eagles in a lot of 3 and long situations, getting four interceptions and even scoring our only TD. Offensively, we couldn't get it in the end zone--same old, same old.
    4. Reading

      Aug. 30, 1997 I became a wife!
    5. From reading Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggrichs, I learned that when a wife feels unloved, she becomes disrespectful, when a husband feels disrespected, he responds in an unloving way.  Click the link for a funny post about how we put into practice what we learned and got off the "crazy cycle."
    6. Photo Tip

    7. Here's a photography tip I found at the Aums on how to get kids to smile for the camera: Let them say “peepee” instead of “cheese.”
    8. Calories

    9. McDonalds is going to start posting the calories of their food.  I really don't want to know how many calories are in those shakes I like!
    10. Sports Illustrated

    11. There is a monthly hour Sports Illustrated TV show that Gerard discovered recently and says is very good. It was on last night on NBC Sports Network and 8 p.m. E.T.  You can opt out of getting the Swim Suit issue of Sports Illustrated--it really is a good magazine with interesting articles and lots of action shots.  Early Dementia for Retired NFL Players is an example of one of the good articles!
    12. Sky

    13. On my way to the bus stop one day last week (I think Tuesday), the clouds were so unusual that I took a picture. There was light blue sky with some fluffy grey clouds with orange highlights! I don't remember ever seeing clouds like that. Unfortunately, my camera couldn't capture the light colors very well but this is the best I could get.

    Happy Tennis News For Me

When we played tennis for the first time this year about a month ago, I was very worried about my legs.  I couldn't run!  My right leg actually locked up on me when I tried and my left knee was hurting pretty bad.  I can't believe I still won because I could not move fast at all.  That's when I decided to check the side affects of the latest medication I was on:  Fosomax that is supposed to strengthen my bones.  Sure enough, joint pain and muscle pain were both listed as possible side affects.

I finally called the doctor and was told by his receptionist to discontinue taking it and see what happens.  I stopped taking it the Saturday of Memorial weekend and was thrilled to be able to play tennis the following weekend with no pain and could run again too!  I am so relieved and happy to still be able to play decent!

    She's Too Good--What Should I Do?

I heard somewhere one of the definitions of going crazy is doing the same thing over and over and getting the same results. That sums up my tennis matches with Karen. She wins ALL THE TIME and beats me like a drum. I get so frustrated that I sometimes take it out on my racket. Even buying new tennis balls didn't help.

How do you think I should approach these games?
    (A) "Hey, at least I'm getting a full body workout."
    (B) Take some satisfaction from the few points I score.
    (C) Take my beating and just be quiet, admiring her skill.
    (D) Forget the racket and grab the dog leash instead.

Karen says she doesn't mind winning all the time and is happy that I still play with her. I just wish I were better. It would be nice to win at least once in a while. Since we've been playing over 14 years, I think I could count on one hand the number of matches I've won.

5 Things I Learned This Week #92 (video, Venus, poll, CPR, Modem)

    They Liked My Video!

I received an email letting me know that Freebies and Specials posted my Stearns Homestead video! It made me feel good that they used it to promote Stearns Homestead's fall festival. We went last Saturday and bought two slices of homemade pumpkin pie and a mum for our front yard.

    Dog at Tennis Matches

When playing Freekibble this week I learned that the tennis player, Venus Williams, often takes her Toy Yorkshire Terrier, Pete, to matches with her (named after Pete Sampras). Now I like her even more!

    Book Blog Poll Results

In my survey at Grab A Book From Our Stack, 16 out of 16 people said they would rather read the book first than see the movie first. This may be due to the fact that mostly readers, if not all, are the ones who visit that blog. How about you?

    CPR

I read in the PLAIN DEALER this week that now the best CPR technique for heart attack victims is to skip the opening airway and mouth-to-mouth and just start right off with the chest compressions to get the blood circulating.

    Internet Connection

Our "high speed Internet" has been a joke for some time. Gerard keeps saying we should get a new computer but this week I had enough of getting the message "Server Not Found" or "Problem Loading page" and decided to buy a new modem. It worked! Now it doesn't take forever to respond to our clicks and no more of those annoying messages! Yippee!

Review and Preview of Our Favorite Sports Teams

Here is a rundown of our views on our favorite Cleveland, Boston, Detroit teams and Ohio State and Duke:

    Baseball:

    Cleveland Indians:

What's wrong with my Wahoos? Had a terrible year. Got off to their usual slow start. Then, traded Cliff Lee, a Cy Young Award winner and got nothing back in return. POOF! At least Wedge was fired but then they hired Acta, manager of the worst team in National League. POOF AGAIN! Outlook for 2010: VERY BAD. Sorry, tribe fans! (by Leo the Lion)

    Boston Red Sox:

I got to see almost all of the Red Sox games this year and I loved it thanks to DirectTV! Had some very exciting games and were the American League wild card. Outlook for 2010: Have good pitching, now need some offense! (by Gerard)

    Football:

    Ohio State Buckeyes:

They are in the Rose Bowl! That's good but could have easily went undefeated too. Twice they lost games they had no business losing. Outlook for 2010: VERY GOOD! (by Gerard)

    Detroit Lions:

They still stink. Also, did not win football pool once this season! POOF! Only highlight for me was seeing the Lions win on the last play of the game against the Browns even after the time ran out! Ha, ha! At lesat Penn State had a good year. (by Leo the Lion)

    Cleveland Browns:

Although their record is poor and they struggled along most of the season, the good news is they beat the Steelers! That is HUGE! It's been a long time since they've done that. They are finishing out the season strong with 3 wins in a row and possibly four if they win tomorrow. Even when they lost, most games were close and they never quit! They certainly have improved along the way. Outlook for 2010: OPTIMISTIC and HOPEFUL! Check out what I think about Josh Cribbs: Ignorance Is Bliss--Better Not to Know How Much Others Make(by Karen)

    New England Patriots:

They made it back into the playoffs. Good to see Brady back. Outlook for 2010: BRIGHT! (by Gerard)

    Basketball:

    Duke:

We all enjoy Duke! The Cameron Crazies are the best fans going. Look for them to go far in March Madness. (by Gerard)

    Boston Celtics:

When all the players are healthy, they are a top team. (by Gerard)

    Cleveland Cavaliers:

They are looking good and on a roll! Since I got this nice shirt for Christmas, I am more interested in how they are doing and have started following them more. Outlook for 2010: VERY GOOD! (by Karen)

    Hockey:

    Boston Bruins:

What a way to start the year! The winter classic at Fenway Park, WOW! I love watching the Bruins! Outlook for 2010: ROAR!

    Tennis:

Karen and I enjoyed playing a lot of tennis last year and we even got to play one day in November! She was glad to be able to play again after having a lumpectomy in September. It really is good exercise and fun! (by Gerard)

None of our teams won any championships but the drama and suspense make sports so much fun to watch! Always remember to be a good sport!

    Summer In November In Ohio!

We started the day with our usual breakfast at Hometown Buffet. I went to the ladies "Sweet Saturday" gathering at church and had a great time. Then we took Abby for a ride to Sears and Gerard bought a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner.

Today our weather was great--unbelievable for mid-November! We took Abby to the park where she got to meet some new dogs, bark at some squirrels and see a couple deer who she did NOT bark at! I was very surprised at that. By the time we were on our way home, the temperature was 70!

Gerard and I changed into shorts and went to play tennis. Other years the nets are taken down on Oct. 31, but this year they are still up so we took advantage of it. It was the first time I've played since my lumpectomy and I still won 6-2, 6-1 and didn't have any pain. I am SO thankful for that because I tried using my left hand at first and it was not good!

To top off our day, the Ohio State Buckeyes won in overtime against Iowa and are headed for the Rose Bowl now on New Year's Day! Gerard is very happy about that!

Hope you had a super Saturday too! Was your weather as good as ours? What did you do?

    4 Things I Learned This Week--Part 28

    Birds

When reading Mountain Man Mondays, What's That In Your Hand I found out that birds like grape jelly! I also found out that woodpeckers like to eat upside down!

    Softball Tip

When we played softball last Saturday, I picked up this tip from the opposing team. Their pitcher was having trouble finding the "handle" on a slow rolling ball and not facing first base but heard the first baseman yelling to him. I overheard him say after the inning that hearing her voice helped him to know where to throw the ball and was able to get our runner out. Since I play first, this is a tip I tucked away.

    Tennis Site

I discovered this great site for tennis players: www.tennis.com/yourgame. It has a lot of instruction in forms of articles, videos and a whole archive to "Tips of the Week."

    Digital Camera

I finally got around to loading the photo loader software and reading the manual for my digital camera while on vacation this week. I learned how to add audio to a photo. I can play it on the computer but don't know how to upload it here. I also found out I can crop and resize pictures right on the camera! There's also a feature to take movies and upload them directly to YouTube but I haven't decided if I want to do that yet. I'd have to install more software and don't want it messing up my Flip stuff. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    What A Gorgeous Day--Wish It Wouldn't End

Today was just beautiful. Finally had good weather on a Saturday! This morning Gerard went to the gym and I had time to participate on some discussion forums while waiting for the temperature to rise. Gerard and I took advantage of the warm sunny day by playing tennis for the first time this year. We played an hour and a half which was longer than usual. I lost! He used his new racquet for the first time and won 6-3 and 6-4. We had a lot of deuces and I was just not up to speed. He played very well though but it just felt so good to be outside playing again, I really didn't mind losing.

We had lunch at Steak-n-Shake which was very good. I was so thirsty after playing tennis that I drank two waters right away. I had a vanilla shake, and a hamburger. I didn't want the fries but they brought them anyway but didn't charge me for them so I ate three. Gerard had a diet Coke, fries and a hamburger.

I had computer time again and cat time. Then it was off to the gym for my workout with the trainer on upper body. My legs were kind of tired from tennis. After that, we went for a walk in the park and saw kids playing in the creek, ducks swimming and a lot of dogs. We talked for a bit with one of the dog walkers there that volunteered at the Parma Animal Shelter. Then we went to check out the new animal hospital and veterinary clinic/pet spa that was recently built right next to the Animal Shelter that is only about five minutes from our house. We wanted to check it out because we're thinking of taking our cats there for their annual checkups instead since it's so close to us so would be less stressful for them.

Then, to top things off, the Indians whop the Yankees big time again--22-4! LOL!!! I watched from the 5th inning on. I had hoped to play some catch, but my feet were just too tired and the Bruins are on so Gerard is watching that now.

What a great day, I hate to see it end! How was your Saturday? What did you do fun?

Two Hours of Tennis Was Very Fun!

Yesterday Gerard and I went to a very nice neighborhood park not too far away from our home to make up for being stuck at home all yesterday afternoon. The tennis courts there are very nice without any cracks. Our first set took an hour because we needed a tie breaker at 6-6. Gerard won! I was having trouble putting the ball where I wanted it. The sun was bright and we took a water break in between sets. I won the second set 6-2 and so then we had to play a third set which is very unusual for us since I normally win the first to in an hour. Gerard was more tuckered than I so I won the last set 6-1. It was very fun though, but it got hot and we both wanted to get to some shade so we passed on the bocce ball and headed for the pond to read on the swing in the shade. Unfortunately, there is only one swing in the shade and it was occupied. Gerard settled for reading on the ground under a tree and I read in the car. It was a very pleasant day and it felt good to get out and exercise.

I got a headache from all that sun so watched "Death of a Cheerleader" and "Fab Five" on Lifetime when I got home. I enjoyed both those movies.

Great Exercise, Fun, and Free--Tennis Everyone!

Tennis is good exercise and a great sport because:

    1. It's easy and fun!

    1. It only takes two people.

    2. Even old people like me can still play.

    3. Just need a racquet and some balls.

I'm really surprised more people don't play. I encourage you to try it and even list some basic tips for you here, some of which come from the book, Checklist For Better Tennis by William Bodcus and some which I just picked up on my own:

    1. Always keep your eye on the ball AND on contact point a split ssecond after impact (like golf).

    2. Bend your knees, especially on low balls so you can keep the head of your racquet above your wrist.

    3. Go for everything if you think it might be in, even if you don't think you'll make it--sometimes I surprise myself and am constantly surprising my husband at what I can get to.

    4. Know where you want to hit the ball BEFORE it comes over the net--plan ahead and be aggressive!

    5. Keep the ball in the court--make your opponent EARN their points!

    6. Start your backswing early to get in position to make a good shot.

    7. SQUEEZE the racquet as you hit the ball.

    8. Attack the ball whenever possible, don't wait for it to come to you except on the high ones, then wait and step back rather than try to jump to hit it.

    9. Stroke THROUGH the ball, don't bat at it.

    10. On your backhand, lean into the stroke toward the net, keeping your wrist and elbow locked.

Now, don't just sit here on the computer reading blogs and making drops all day when it's a beautiful day outside. Get out there and enjoy it! Give tennis a try! Make friendship and exercise the priorities and winning third. HAVE SOME FUN!!!
