6 Things We Learned This 8th Week of 2012 (sports, Funny, Internet, News, Scrub)

Friday Fragments is hosted my Half-Past Kissin' Time for bloggers to post a list of short things on their minds that aren't really enough for a whole post. We like to share what we've learned each week.

1. Jousting

   There is a new reality TV show on the History Channel where I learned how to keep score in jousting! I didn't even know there was scoring in that. I posted all about it last Sunday: History Comes To Life on New Reality Show: Full Metal Jousting.

2. President's Day

   I thought Sparkle had the funniest President's Day post but at the same time was educational about cats in the white house! Spunky Doodle and Manny loved it! Go see Happy Presidents' Cats Day for a laugh. I was surprised that President Lincoln was the first to bring in a cat to the White house!

3. Internet Shut Down

Apparently there is a rumor going around that the FBI is shutting down the Internet March 8 which I hadn't heard until I read The Older Geek's post about it: FBI to Shut Down Interne March 8, 2012--True or False? According to the post, it's only if your computer has a specific trojan and there's a test link that you can click on to find out! It said mine is clean--woo hoo!

4. Basketball

   By reading Front and Center by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, I learned several things about basketball that I didn't know before including that the point guard is the leader on the court and not the Center which is what I thought.

5. News

   A teenager, Austin Smith, lifted a car to save his 74 yr. old grandfather who was under it when it fell on top of him. The grandfather was able to get out from under it when his grandson lifted it.  Yea for Austin! I saw this on Yahoo News this morning.

6. Chocolate Scrub

   Here is the chocolate scrub recipe that some of you wished I had included when I first mentioned it:
   Mix: 
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar in raw (I have no clue where to find this)1/4 cup olive oil then
1/2 of 1/4 cup (varies depending on how oily you want it)
3 Tablespoons of cocoa
2 Tablespoons of vanilla

Rub it on your scaly skin areas, leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse and it is supposed to soften your skin. I'd love to hear what you think of it if you decide to try it!

7 Things We Learned This Week 22 of 2011 (Photography, animals, computer, Facebook)

Photography

Playing Freekibblekat, I learned that 91% polled said they have more photos of their pets than of their spouse, significant other or friends. I got this question right because I know I have way more pictures of our pets. How about you?

Cheetah

On our trip to the zoo Memorial Day, we actually heard a cheetah make a noise for the first time. I thought it would sound like a kind of roar like the leopard makes but it actually sounded like a cat! Yes, it made the same noise my cat Manny makes, kind of a little screech. It sort of purred too.

 Computer Training

At work I switched to Windows 7 and Office 2010. One full day of training and I’m off and running! One thing about computers, they are also updating and improving things.

What Does Performance Alert Mean? (UPDATED 11/24)

I keep getting an annoying message from my Norton anti-virus whenever I use my Firefox browser lately (It comes up when I use IE too). It's a pop-up message in the lower right corner that says " performance alert--high CPU usage by Firefox" with a little graph. I have no idea what this is for, if I should be worried about it, or how to get it to stop. It's just annoying. I know Firefox uses a lot of memory. I really don't need Norton to keep telling me that.

Anyone know what this is all about and if there's anything I could to do get it to stop short of removing my Norton protection?  I ran the anti-malware last night like Kathy from the Junk Drawer suggested.  It took two hours and it did find a couple infected objects; however, this box still pops up so I guess that wasn't it.

P.S.  "Right Where We Belong" is going to be our new blog title. Now I need to find someone to do a new header for me. I'd love to include pictures of us and our pets in it.

How To Help When Disaster Strikes

You can donate at The American Red Cross site to help people hit by disasters to recover from the destruction and devastation. You don't have to fee helpless. This past week I went there to donate to help the relief effort in Haiti.

Exercise

In the PLAIN DEALER "Parade" insert, I learned of a study the average gym goer works out less than two hours a week, but the average dog owner spends eight hours a week walking. When pressed for time, dog owners still walk their dogs but gym goers often blow off working out. I know I enjoy walking more since we got our dog. I can't remember ever going to the park in the winter just to walk through the snow before we got a dog. Read about the fun we had at the park: We Went Squirrel Chasing

Prayer Request

Over at Cheaper By The Half Dozen Rene Morris' cousin, James, has colon cancer and she is asking the blogging community to pray for his healing. This blogger was the first one to read my book, (My Funny Dad, Harry) and her blog was one of the first I found. She is also an young adult fiction author of Sonshine Girls--Summer Secret which I read and enjoyed.

Computer Virus Protection

At Comedy Plus I learned that Norton is not very good at protecting computers from viruses and Malware, but that AVG free version 9.0 is much better. Instructions included that you should go to wwww.download.com first which takes you to cnet where you then type in what you want to download such as "AVG free version 9.0." Also, it confirmed to me that IE is not a good browser to use and the Firefox is the better choice. I wish I knew a computer guru who could take care of this kind of thing for me. UPDATED: Sandy informed me that "Lavasoft Ad-Aware is the program that catches the malware/adware. It's free too."

Crafts

I learned over at Make and Takes post Edible Playdoh That You Will Want To Eat that you can actually make playdoh that you want to eat! It's made with peanut butter, honey and powdered sugar. What a great craft for kids--as long as they aren't allergic to peanuts.
