When my husband decided to clean our kitchen trash container, I laughed. It just struck me funny that he would do that but not change the filter on a vacuum cleaner or wash the litter boxes. He seemed to think it was a perfectly normal and sensible thing to do that everyone does.
I on the other hand, I am doubtful that most people do this, not that I minded. I actually think it’s wonderful that he does the cleaning at our house and am happy that I do not have to. So, we are taking a survey by our readers to see if Gerard is right (that most people do wash their trash containers) or if Karen is right (most people do not wash their trash containers).
Please let us know if you do or don’t in the comments. We're curious!
UPDATED 2/10/11:
Well, according to the comments we received, I am shocked that I was wrong about this and Gerard was actually right! Most people do wash their garbage cans. I stand corrected (however, I think if we had a bigger response, it would prove me right. Maybe some people just don't want to admit they don't do it)!

I'm with Gerard on this one. We wash our trash cans. All of them. The ones in the restrooms, the office and the kitchen.
Have a terrific day. :)
No trash can washing here!
We clean them! We also change the vacuum filters and the litter box. LOL
I wash our trash cans a couple of times a month.
Our dad occasionally washes the trash can that goes under the kitchen sink, but not the Outside trash can.
We clean out the trash can. Otherwise, we get ants. Gotta scrub it with bleach water.
I do clean the trash cans that are in the house. Every once in a while Hubs rinses out the outside one--in the summer it gets rather disgusting!
I'm guessing that Gerard is smiling from ear to ear. You'll have a tough time living this one down Karen. :)
I used to wash our old one...then it got to be so bad I couldn't take it anymore and bought a new one with liners that fit more properly...haven't washed this one yet but I am with Gerard on this...I think it is great that he does this!
Only when they are really, REALLY, nasty. And then I think only the kitchen one. I used to try liners (grocery bags) in the bath room ones but that doens't happen very often. I think every few years or so, when they are nasty or we're changing decor, we get new cans.
Wash our trash cans? No, afraid not. If you and Gerard ever come to Tallahassee, give me advance notice as I'm pretty sure our waste receptacles are not up to his high standards. :-)
I just wash the kitchen garbage one when I can. The smaller ones don't get yucky from over spill. I guess that's another for Gerard.
Hi Karen and Gerard, thanks for stopping by my site :)
I clean the kitchen trash can a couple times a year, but only that one.
I do clean them....but only when I remember to, which isn't really very often. But you can put me down for not normal if it helps, lol.
My husband decided to wash our garbage can. He ended up rinsing of the soap on the lid with the wand in the sink. What's the big deal, you ask? Well, our garbage can has one of those lids that opens automatically when you move your hand over a sensor. Which means it has electric circuits and batteries and such in it.
Water + electricity = broken garbage can.
Me = UBER po'd
So personally, I'd never bother washing a garbage can.. Wipe down with a damp cloth, yes.

Hi Karen
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I've read your survey and I must admit I'm with you on this one. I will not touch our garbage container, even with a ten foot pole. My hubby on the other hand, does clean it every so often.
So Gerard - 1 more
And Karen - 1 more
Another garbage can washer here, it could be done more often though. It's always on my 'to do' list.
My husband cleans the trash cans.
I try to use trash can liners, but I do occasionally (probably not often enough!!) wash them out.
Hey Karen where does every now and then fit in?
I don't like this chore, but my husband always notices a clean trash can...go figure. Go Gerard!
