Critter Damage Update

Thanks for all the helpful and funny comments on our "Did You Ever Have This Yard Problem" post. We received suggestions that it might have been aliens, skunks, armadillos or wild boars that did the damage. We tend to think it was probably a skunk or two. We do see skunks in our neighborhood sometimes so it is the most likely choice.

Gerard called Loew's to see if they had anything we could put on the grass to keep away the rascals and they did.  We went to Home Depot and got Critter Ridder only to return to find this email from Kathy at the Junk Drawer:

It's interesting you mention Critter Ridder. Dave and I listened to a gardening/outdoors radio program in the car today. We heard some woman talking about a surefire method to rid herself of skunks (we think, but we never did hear what her animal problem was and the radio host never mentioned it again, nor did we get to hear what the cure was!). Anyway, whatever she had she said Critter Ridder didn't do a thing to solve her problem. Only mentioning that so you know it might not work and don't spend too much money on it until you know if it's effective.

Apparently, skunks dig for grubs and Lin from Duck and Wheel With String told us what to do about it.

GRUBS! You've got them and they eat up the roots to your grass. Many animals eat them from skunks to raccoons, so that is where the damage came from. We had raccoons do this to our yard years ago. Just plant grass seed and put down GRUB-X in March or April.  Oh--to test for grubs in any season, just grab a handful of grass and give a tug--like you are lifting a toupee off an old geezers head. If it is grubs, your lawn will lift up.

Gerard couldn’t try it yet because it’s been raining every day and the instructions say to apply it on a dry sunny day. Gerard put patch over the bare spots and we will definitely be getting the Grub-X if the Critter Ridder doesn’t work. So far, it’s been a week and there has been no additional digging. That’s good news!

Just so you know our front yard looks good, Gerard wanted me to post a picture of it.  So here's a view from our dining room window:

Do You Visit The Old Geezer?

While walking Abby around our neighborhood, I saw this funny sign:

Immediately I thought of a blog recently discovered called “The Old Geezer Blog.” I think I found it through Saturday Samplings over at Half-Past Kissin’ Time. He is a Christian blogger who has his testimony posted via a link on his sidebar. Do you read sidebars on blogs? If not, you are missing out on some interesting things. His blog is very easy to read, uncluttered with interesting posts about general every day things that are thought provoking. I always enjoy his graphics that he includes in his posts too. He has over 1100 followers but still responds to comments I leave there. Stop by to visit The Old Geezer Blog if you get a chance. I’m sure you will enjoy your visit there and maybe add him to your blog roll or become a follower.

Do you ever look at blog rolls on other blogs? Sometimes I do and have found some good ones that way. Also, if you like comments a good way is to read those comments left on other blogs and if someone leaves one you find interesting or amusing, visit their blog and leave a comment for them. Chances are they will visit you back. At least you know they leave comments.

I Wish I Could Read The Comments On My Most Popular Post!

UPDATED 10/20/09 AT 3:45 P.M.: Thanks for all your help everyone. I had a feeling it was junk but since it looked like it came from different people, wasn't sure. This is crazy! I deleted all of them and activated comment moderation for posts older than 14 days for now--I spent 20 minutes cleaning this mess up--not how I had planned on using this time but I'm glad it's solved now.

What is my most popular post on this blog? It's "Will God Forgive Abortion?" It has 45 comments but unfortunately, most of them are apparently in a different language so I don't have a clue what's going on (only 7 are in English). At first, I thought it was spam so just deleted a couple when they started up, but then I realized that perhaps it was Japanese or Chinese because there were different numbers of characters as the names. Maybe if you took a look at the comments on that post, you could help me out. I assume there must be some heated discussion going on there. I can't really moderate if it I don't know what they are saying.

Has this ever happened on your blog? Should I count this in my most popular posts even though most of the comments are not in English? What would you do? Can anyone translate for me or at least summarize what is going on there? It's the only post that this happened on.

Thanks, Bumbles, For This Commenting Award!

The Bumbles gave me this award last week and wrote a very nice little synopsis about my blog so I wanted to acknowledge it here. I normally don't participate in awards, but since this one is easy to determine who to give it to, I decided to actually post about it.

So, I want to pass this award on to my following top commenters:

Daisy The Curly Cat: It's humbling to me that this busy cat takes time practically every day to visit and comment on my blog. She gets so many comments every day on her posts and I'm sure her day is very busy. My husband and I both enjoy reading Daisy's blog every day because it's so funny and cute! We also love her brother, Harley and enjoy trying to figure out the answers to her riddles. It's a very amusing blog.

Mountain Woman at Red Pine Mountain: My good blogging buddy who has beautiful pictures of her Vermont farm on her blog and who also is doing a fitness blog to encourage people to lose weight sensibly. She always writes so beautifully that you feel her emotions and the beauty she around her that she shares. She has also been a big promoter of the book I wrote in memory of my dad, "My Funny Dad, Harry."

Sandee from Comedy plus has a fantastic humor blog. If you need a laugh, stop by her blog. She is also a good blogging buddy of mine because we seem to have similar backgrounds and are close in age. She loves boating and is retired with a great sense of humor.

Beaded Tail has unique jewelry and a blog about two cats and a dog, just like our family! The dog even looks a lot like Abby. I love seeing the pictures of her beautiful cats and walks with her dog. We are both animals lovers as you can quickly see from the "Animal Rescue Site" and "Feed Hungry Cats & Dogs" widgets that we have on our blogs.

Duck and Wheel with StringLin at Duck and Wheel With String writes about all kinds of things and her posts usually bring out some sort of emotion, often laughter. I love her big fat orange stripey cat named Hobbes and the things she writes about him, but also everyday life situations. She has a very interesting blog.

Mrs.4444 at Half Past Kissin' Time is a secondary grade school teacher who has a funny, interesting, and helpful blog. She is constantly supporting other bloggers and hosts Friday Fragments. I enjoy her posts that she writes about her teaching experiences very much and am honored she comments so often on my blog.

Kathy at The Junk Drawer has a very funny blog because she comes up with the silliest things to post about and has a humorous writing style with lots of readers commenting all the time. It's also fun to read the other comments. I know she visits many blogs and am honored that mine is one of them and that she takes time to comment. She is very transparent on her blog and shares about her personal and embarrassing experiences.

My new commenters widget made this very easy to determine who my top commenters are. I found it on Mountain Woman's blog and it shows your commenters based on your last 500 posts (although now it's acting up and is not accurate--it would be nice if these widgets would work consistently)! However, I still kept the one that shows monthly top commenters too for those who are new readers to give them a chance too at getting on my list and I can see who the most current commenters are at a glance. These widgets are both in my right column under the popular posts.

Thanks For Commenting In January!

If you made a comment on here during January, you should be listed. If you aren't it is just an oversight on my part and not intentional. Please let me know if you should be listed and I will add you on. Although I thought this was a nice way to acknowledge my commenters, it does take extra time and it seems I'm getting more and more each month. Consequently, this will be my last post like this. I do appreciate all my readers and especially like reading your comments on my posts.
