Art by Amber Kempthorn & Dana Oldfather -- Guess the Prices!

The paintings below are displayed in the lobby at Key Tower.  Some I like, some I don't, but they are all out of my price range.  I thought we could play a little game called guess the price! 

The first four are combinations of different processes done by Amber Kempthorn. 

#1 "Cuyahoga":  I kind of like this one.  I especially like the little lightening bugs.  My photo really does not do it justice.

#1--Cuyahoga (spray paint, pastel, charcoal & college, 44x30")

#2  "Lost, I Said":  I kind of like this one because of all the different things in it, especially the beaver and cat on the rocker!  I really don't get the pile up of cars though. 

#2--Lost, I Said (acrylic, charcoal, gouache & graphite on paper, 30x22")

#3 "Close to the Edge":  I like the butterflies in this one, but don't get why the scissors are at the bottom or why there seem to be two moons.  I like the colors in this though.

#4 "Our Reach":  I don't get what they are reaching for in this, do you?  Anyone care to explain what this is to me?

Do you have your price guesses in mind?  I'll give you little hint--they are all over $2,000!

Now for round 2:  The four paintings below were done by Dana Oldfather.  According to the artist's statement, these mirror a rushing world distorted by apprehension.  These paintings attest to inherent emotional conflict of parenting young children, and the fragility of comfort and happiness in America.

I certainly wouldn't buy any of these for even $5.00!  I think anyone could make any of these or similar to them very easily.  I just don't understand this type of art at all and really am surprised anyone would spend thousands of dollars for any of these.  What do you think of these?

What's Your Hobby--I Used To Paint

My mom used to watch Bill Alexander paint pictures on TV and he would tell what he was doing as he went along. My dad knew she liked watching the show and built her an easel, made a palette, bought some oil paint, brushes and some of his books for her so she could paint. The books showed a picture with step-by-step instructions on how to paint it. After watching her do it, I wanted to try it too.

My mom and I got many hours of enjoyment from this hobby. As we would finish paintings, dad would build frames for them. The only problem was that we ran out of space to put them. It sure was fun to do though, even if they didn't look exactly like the pictures in the book. I specifically remember doing the "Bayou" and "Hunter's Cabin." We laughed so hard at our attempts to get it just right. The Bayou went pretty will until it was time to put in the canoe with the person in it. The "Hunter's Cabin" one we did twice and couldn't get the cabin the same size as the picture.

I only did one original of my own which was supposed to be a camp site. Again, I had a hard time when it came to putting in people. When I was painting, I noticed things more and found myself thinking, "I could paint this sky or that tree." I would look at a sunset or dawn and actually see the different colors in the sky.

Unfortunately, when clearing out dad's house after he died, I threw out the easel. You can read about it and see three paintings my mom did at Are You Sure You Want To Throw That Away? at "My Funny Dad, Harry.

I found ants in my cats' food bowl Friday when I got home from work. How do you keep ants out of the cats' food? I looked it up on http://answers.yahoo.com and sure enough, it has been asked before. The best answer by Katslookup--not suspended yet was to spray Home Defense around the OUTSIDE of the house, windows, doors, foundation but also place the bowl inside a larger dish filled with water so there is a moat around the cat's food bowl. Ants can't swim so won't be able to get to it! I tried this and it worked! No ants crawling in the food since, just some around the bowl which I promptly squashed with my fingers. Another Painting Project

I finally got the stackable shelves painted over the weekend that my dad built and used in his garage. They were just the bare wood and I want to put them in my rec room so I can move the games from my hall closet to the shelves and make more room for all our blankets and comforters and throws that are currently stuffed in my bathroom closet and our laundry hamper just because we don't have enough room for them all. Finally Getting Rid of the Old Ugly Mustard Color!

Today is the day I finally quit procrastinating and just do it! Since we've moved here almost 11 years ago, the kitchen had the one wall by the counter top an ugly mustard color. I figured that since I painted the upstairs bathroom and a basement cupboard that since it was only a small area, I could just do it myself and save some money. I already had the yellow paint leftover from when I painted the upstairs bathroom. The difference though is that for the bathroom and cupboard, I used the roller but for this wall in the kitchen, I have to use a brush. I am finding that it is different. Not only doesn't it go as fast, but I can't seem to get it on even and my strokes show! I'm hoping that once I go over it with a second coat, it will be okay, but if not, I'll be calling Handyman Connection again!
