I Am Eating Veggies Again!

I like vegetables, but don't like many raw.  For years I avoided getting them because canned vegetables, although good, were so high in salt.  The canned peas in the picture have 300 mg of salt!  My new find, frozen Bird's Eye bags have zero salt!  That's right, none!  And, they taste very good!  I can put the whole bag in the microwave for 4.5 minutes for the corn and peas and 6 min. for the green beans.  Wait 1 minute, then easily tear open and dump them into a bowl.  Each bag has about four servings.

I am so excited I found something healthy to eat that is easy to fix and that I like eating!

Since I saw a doctor specializing in kidney disfunction and my health scan last November indicated I was pre-diabetic, I am trying to eat healthier and stay away from pastas, rice, salt and bakery.  I was eating these things every day so now I only have them maybe once a week or less.  I want to avoid Diabetes!

Here is a list of other changes to my diet that I have made over the years:
When working:                                    Since retired:
had a donut every Friday . . . . . . . . . . Dec. of 2019, had only about 5 donuts
2 big slices of pizza 3 days a week . . . Individual Lean Cusine Spinach frozen pizza less than once a week
Added an apple every day (kidney advice)
Added blueberries on my cereal (kidney advice)
Added pineapple almost every day (kidney advice)
Cut out Calcium vitamin (kidney Dr.'s advice)
Cut down to 1 Vitamin D3 a day instead of 2 (kidney Dr.'s advice)
                                                                Cut down on chocolate
Replaced protein bars with granola bars (diabetic nutritionist)
Eating mostly fish (salmon, cod, some tuna), chicken, turkey
Usually only drink Joint Juice and water

Do you follow your doctor's advice?  I try!

Eating Salmon With Cats Is Not Easy!

I like to have a nice big piece of salmon for supper once a week and every time I do, my cats want some too! This is a sure way to get my cats to climb on me. It's a little hard to eat when they gang up on me like this. They are so cute though, I can't resist giving them some little bits at the end. A Word from Manny and Spunky Doodle: We are so happy our mommy is buying some real salmon now. We both like it and think she should give us more than just that tiny bit! Do you shared a meal with your pets?

What We Eat Really Can Make A Difference!

There's a Cancer support group that meets once a month. This month's meeting met last Wednesday and the topic was nutrition. When the Cancer education counselor told me about it, my first thought was that I already knew what they would say. It's not like I don't know I eat unhealthy stuff and know vegetables are good for me. The last minute though, I decided to go after all to check it out, see who all was there, find out what the resource center looked like and where it was.

I am so glad I went because I learned so much! The most important and biggest thing I learned was why certain foods are so bad and why others are so good. We saw a DVD called "Food For The Fight." I always thought "healthy foods" and "unhealthy foods" were all about weight management but boy was I wrong! According to this video, Food is medicine. Keep eating to survive even if doesn't taste good while having chemo. Sugar is cancer cells' best friend because it helps them grow. Good foods help build good cells that fight against the cancer cells.

Foods to Avoid that I eat: high fat foods like donuts, muffins, sweet rolls, ice cream,
Good foods are: cooked vegetables, bananas, chicken, scrambled eggs, a dietary supplement.

At least pizza wasn't on the "avoid" list, thank God! That is my staple food--I eat two slices 4 days a week!
For good nutrition and to maintain a healthy weight, we should:
Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day
Eat whole grain cereals, pastas, and bread products
Take a multivitamin daily (discuss with your doctor which is best for you)
Limit alcohol to 1 drink a day (I do good on this since I don't drink at all!)
Exercise more, walking is considered exercise so I'm okay on this too. The American Cancer Society recommends that women with breast cancer exercise about 4 hours a week.

The day after the meeting I shopped and bought a salad, cucumber, tomatos, carrots, almonds, prunes, bananas, trail mix and some V8 juice to try.

Homestay Mama sent me the link to this interview of Brenda Cobb at the Living Foods Institute which proves that diet can make a difference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVLDPI0TH90
(I did have the video embedded but it was too wide and I didn't know how to fix it.)

Ever hear the phrase "If I knew then what I know now
?" I used to be a "Junk Food Junkie," even had a shirt that said so. I was never fat so I kind of prided myself on being able to eat all kinds of fattening stuff without gaining for the longest time. I lived on Shakes, burgers, fries, fried chicken, pop every day, chocolate, Cheetoes, Doritoes, macaroni & cheese, some ice cream and of course lots of pizza! I made some changse when I started working out with a personal trainer but it basically amounted to cutting out the pop, fries, munchees and adding a protein drink. I still have a long ways to go, but I'm getting there with God's help!

I hope by sharing this information others will reconsider their eating habits and perhaps avoid growing those Cancer cells! I managed to down 4 cups of green tea the first 3 days after attending this meeting. Please continue praying that I will acquire a taste for it--still not good!

Dining Out on Weekends (my 100th Post)

I am easy to please as far as eating out goes. I do not care for fancy, high-priced restaurants and Gerard, my husband, doesn't either. I think the most expensive restaurant we ever went to is The Olive Garden. Since we don't cook, on the weekends we usually go out to eat somewhere just for some variety. Here is the list of our favorite places to eat:

Golden Corral: This we both enjoy because of the wide variety of choices AND there's no waiting! Generally, we wait until we are hungry to go for lunch so once we arrive, we are ready for our food! I usually eat four to five plates of food and Gerard usually does two.

Hometown Buffet: This is another buffet place that is even closer to our home than Golden Corral where we can really chow down. Although I don't think it has as much variety as the Golden Corral and not as many desserts to from which to choose, it is more convenient and we are always full afterwards.

The Cracker Barrel: The first time we ever went to Cracker Barrel I think was on Sweetest Day. Thus, it has become a tradition of ours to go there on Sweetest Day each year. This is a real restaurant, but the decor is early American. There are wooden rocking chairs for sale, a small "general store" attached with all sorts of things from years ago such as old-time games, old-fashioned candy, some home decor stuff as well as more modern things such as Ohio State Buckeye apparel. On our first visit Gerard purchased a very pretty sweatshirt for me with a fall scene on it that has pockets! The food is delicious and the service is fast! They even have a checker board set up where we played checkers once and little hi-Q games at the tables you can play while you wait to be served.

CiCi's: Since I am a pizza lover, we order pizza every Sunday from a small neighborhood pizza place called Casamel's. We like it better than the major chains because it's not not as spicy. We limit ourselves to just two pieces each and then I take two to work for lunch on Monday and Tuesday.Sometimes though, we'll even treat ourselves to CiCi's on a Saturday. Again, this is a buffet but with only salad (which we usually skip), pizza and pasta, breadsticks and brownies and cookies. They have a row of pizzas out with different toppings--even spinach and macaroni! Gerard always counts how many slices I eat--usually around 6-8. He generally eats two but likes the breadsticks and cookies.

If we don't want to take much time for lunch and just want something quick, then we hit these fast-food places: Arby's, Subway, Wendy's, McDonalds. I love breakfast food any time of the day!

Yum, Yum!
