I consider myself to be a very practical person and yet one thing I do that is really unnecessary is making our bed every morning. I can't think of one good reason for doing this, but there are several reasons I can think of not to do it that I list below:
1) It is not necessary. What would happen if we didn't make the bed? Hmm. Nothing. It would absolutely make no difference at all!
2) In fact, it would save some time if we didn't make it. I could pet my cats a few minutes longer or be on the computer a few minutes longer before going off to work.
3) At night, we could actually get into bed faster!
4) No one is home through the day except the cats, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind if it wasn't made. It's not like we have company coming over every day.
5) According to a post at Mommy's Little Corner, it would be better not to make the bed because by leaving pillows and mattresses uncovered and exposed to direct sunlight and fresh dry air, it reduces dust mite populations by dehydrating the critters, which crave moist and warm areas. So, maybe one of my New Year's Resolutions should have been not to make the bed every day. The problem is that I was raised to do it. It does look better made but that really doesn't matter much since no one sees it through the day anyhow.
Maybe I can force myself to break this bad habit I have of making the bed. I don't think Gerard would go for it though, being the neat freak that he is when it comes to the house. Maybe it's worth a try though. Can you think of any good reason why we should make the bed everyday? What unnecessary things do you find yourself doing every day?

That really makes me think - it's something I've always done because that's the way I was raised too. It does seem like a waste of time when you think about it, yet I don't know it I could stand looking at an unmade bed - silly I know, but I just feel better when everything is neat and tidy - I guess I'm a neat freak too.
I don't make our bed everyday. I'm the first up and hubby usually sleeps another hour or two. So he sort of straightens it when he gets up. That's the extent of bed making around here. Now we do make the bed when we wash the bedding. That's the only time.
Have a terrific Monday. :)
Gosh, when you look at it that way, making the bed seems like a terrible waste of time!
I don't make our bed either. I use to, but it occurred to me that It's a waste of time. LOL! Thanks for stopping by.
You have a good point. I like this idea very much. It eases my mind about not making the bed.

My husband gets mad if the bed isn't made. And I sleep better if it is made. Also if it isn't the covers are all messed up and I don't end up getting enough covers at night - then I'm freezing. So that's why I usually make it, even though I hate doing it too.
If we make the bed up entirely with the throw pillows on it and everything, they always end up on the floor because the cats play in them. So, we just straighten it up in the morning to keep cat hair off the pillows at least!
I wonder why I feel compelled to make my bed when you are absolutely right. My mom drummed it into my head my whole life. Now when I make it the kids rip it apart and jump so really what is the point. You are funny.
Thank you, I have been looking for an excuse and number 5 is the one!! Now I won't have to feel bad about not making the bed:)
