Common Knowledge?

My hubby told me some things that surprised me.  He says it is common knowledge that:

(1) The NFL gets paid by the government to do patriotic things at the games. Things like reuniting soldiers with their family or making the flag in the stands with spectators all holding a part of the picture.

(2) The referees have other jobs as well.  Being a NFL referee isn't their primary job.

I did know any of these things that he said "everyone knew."  So, I need to know who is right.  Please let us know in the comments if you knew these things.  I think there are others who didn't know these things either, did you?

The humans here didn't know these - but they don't like football (or any sports) and don't watch it ever. They don't even know the names of any teams, MOL!

I knew that officials had other jobs, but I don't know about the government paying for stuff....They do do flyovers now and then, with bombers, etc. but I've always figured the NFL paid for that. I want proof, Gerard! :)

We knew about those things but for some reason we thought the government stopped paying the NFL as of Oct. 1st but maybe just for some things. There was a big brouhaha when the National Guard was paying to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr's NASCAR car too as 'recruitment' expense. Yeah, sure.

Sports Illustrated, Nov. 16 issue, "Funds and Games" by Michael Rosenberg - here's a quote from it: "Last week we learned that the Department of Defense shelled out millions for "paid patriotism" displays at sporting events over the past four years, most of it to NFL teams. . . As somebody who has stood and applauded troops at games, I was surprised to learn that those on-field tributes were nothing more than simple business transactions, I was also surprised NFL executives did not try to get a higher bid from another country's military."

I did not know any of these! And honestly, paying people to be patriotic sort of makes me mad. I would love to see a team turn down the money for the patriotic things they do--wouldn't that be nice?

I sort of figured the referees had other jobs. I can't imagine that reffing a few games a week would pay the bills.

Nope, I didn't know but am not all that surprised. When the stinkin' government uses tax payer dollars to sponsor NASCAR and other racing cars, why would it surprise me they're wasting our money with the NFL?
