Sunday Sharing: Head Toss

My highlight this week was from the Beth Moore study, "David, A Heart Like His."  After David's son, Absalom died, David decided to go back and re-establish himself in his rightful position on the throne.  However, he heard that Sheba, son of Bicri, was trying to take over.  David sent his army to kill Sheba before he made things any worse.

Sheba ran to Abel Beth Maacah and Joab and David's army started to siege the city.  A woman spoke up, talked to Joab and he told her if they handed over Sheba, he would withdraw from the city.

The woman said to Joab, "His head will be thrown to you from the wall."  Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bicri and threw it to Joab.  So he sounded the trumpet, and his men dispersed from the city, each returning to his home.  And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.  --II Samuel 20:21b-22

They sure did a lot of beheading in Bible times!  I didn't know about this one though, and thought it was kind of strange how they just tossed it over the wall!   This woman was not only wise, but also brave to step in and take control of the situation like that.  I think it's odd though that her name isn't even mentioned.

Cat Librarian

We Would Make Great Library Cats!

A cute Cat was "Hired" As Assistant Librarian in Russia. That's what our library still needs. We just visited a brand new one that opened last Saturday. It was very nice, but it still needs a cat librarian. We also learned that we could return books there that we checked out from a different library since they are all in the same Cuyahoga County system. How convenient is that!

Lolita's Restaurant

Lolita's restaurant is closed on Mondays, however, when I called to make a reservation I got the recorded message that "Currently, all our lines are busy. You can dial 10 to be transferred to the hostess or try again later." When I dialed 10, I got another recorded message saying "Do not leave a message if you are calling to make a reservation." Wouldn't you think they could change their message on Mondays to let people know they were closed? I tried half a day to make a reservation. (The hours are listed at the top of their website, but I was specifically looking for the phone number and didn't pay attention to the hours.

Frosted Flakes

Frosted Flakes' Tony the Tiger is the same age as my hubby--both born in 1952! I discovered this tid-bit when playing free Kibble on Wednesday this week. (That's where I first heard about the library cat too! The link is in my sidebar so you can easily play whenever you visit our blog. Not only do you learn interesting things about cats and dogs, but your click helps provide free food for animal shelters. Down the street, a family has a big blow up Tony Tiger on their front lawn for Halloween--it's cute. On second thought, maybe it's Tigger. (sorry, no picture--didn't know I'd be writing about this)

Red Sox

What a season! They started out one of the worst teams, no one thought they would even make the playoffs and boom! They are the Champions! What made this really special is that they haven't won the World Series at home since 1918 when Babe Ruth was on the team! I am happy for them and the people of Boston. One day it will be the Indians winning the championship--I hope in my lifetime!

Trick-or-Treat

It was rainy but warm yesterday for the trick-or-treaters. I spent so much money on candy lately and we are so busy around the time they come that this year I wasn't going to pass out any candy. I just couldn't skip it though--I love giving out candy to the kids in the neighborhood, it's a chance to interact with my neighbors and it would be the first time I skipped it. I bought two bags of tootsie pops on my morning break, got home even later than usual but still managed to hand them all out. I even chased after some who I missed because I got home so late. What kind of candy did you give out?

Favorite Reads

Our favorite reads for October were Boy Nobody by Allen Zadoff (Gerard's, but I am going to start reading it tomorrow) and The Edge of Normal by Carla Norton (also Gerard's) and my two were Unfinished Symphony by V. C. Andrews and a non-fiction memoir about international adoption from Russia: To Sing Frogs by John Simmons. Click the links to read our review and see the pictures of the books. Strangest Car I Ever Saw!

Seen on Euclid Ave. in downtown Cleveland, summer of 2013

As I was walking outside on my break one day last summer, I saw this silver rocket car parked across the street!  I remember riding these at Euclid Beach, an amusement park we used to go to when I was a kid.  It's not there anymore.  I wonder who rode in this.  It was parked outside of the House of Blues so perhaps it belonged to a singer or band.

Monday Mischief with Manny Boy

I have found a very fun thing to play with in the bathroom recently:

I can put my head into the wastebasket . . .

and pull out light tissue paper!

I love to play with it, tear it apart. . .

and carry it out of the bathroom.

Mom does not like this game though and keeps putting it back in the basket.  She has even threatened to keep the door closed so I can't get in.

Spunky Doodle used to like the toilet paper game when she was a kitten, pulling it right off the roll!

Sunday Sharing: Strong Bones and One Messed Up Family

Strong Bones

Don't depend on your own wisdom, respect the Lord and refuse to do wrong.   Then your body will be healthy and your bones will be strong. --Proverbs 3:7-8 (ICB)

I came across the above verse when studying for my Sunday School lesson this week and I thought what an easy way to stay healthy.  But then, it's not so easy to not depend on my own wisdom.  I have the respecting the Lord and refusing to do wrong part down, I think.  I just need to seek God's wisdom more though instead of relying on my own.

I want to be healthy and have strong bones.  My follow up checkups with my Oncologist due to having had Cancer and being on the Femara drug to keep it from coming back have indicated my bones are getting weaker.  I need more Vitamin D.  Years ago before all this fancy technology, they never would have mentioned such a thing.  Now they tell me by taking more pills, my bones can be improved.  I've been drinking more milk and also taking three be-BALANCED bone strengthening Calcium, a dietary supplement every day. I call them bone chews--they're good!.  I have an appointment coming up Nov. 7 and she'll probably schedule me for another bone scan so I'm hoping there is some improvement.

One Messed Up Family

Back to the life of David and his family, in II Samuel 14:28-29, David's son Absalom has his half-brother Amnon killed at a family celebration for sleeping with Absolom's sister, Tamar.

But he told his servants, "Keep an eye on Amnon.  When he gets a little drunk from the wine and is feeling good, I'll give the signal.  Then kill him!  I've commanded you to do it, so don't be afraid.  Be strong and brave."  Absalom's servants killed Amnon, just as Absalom had told them.  The rest of the king's sons quickly rode away on their mules to escape from Absalom.  (Contemporary English version)

This show what holding in anger and bitterness can do.  I found it interesting that David's family was so messed up.  He was a much better king than a father apparently.  I also found it interesting that just like Absalom's father, he had a servant do his killing for him.  I always was under the impression that Absalom had actually killed Amnon himself.
