5 Things We Learned The 4th Week of 2011 (vacuum, news, dogs, insurance)

This clogged it up!

Vacuum Cleaners

We are supposed to clean the filter on our Dirt Devil every time we use it. Who knew? Our belt broke and had to be replaced. On our Tri-Star, the pouch is supposed to be changed monthly! The back filter once every six months and the inside filter once a year. Oops. See Vacuum Cleaners Need Cleaning Too!

News: Don't Blame Your Grandmother

There was an article in the Chicago Tribune about John Stone, a car salesman in the Chicago area, was fired from his job for wearing a Packers tie to work. His general manager told him to take it off five times in 30 minutes but refused so he was fired. The dealership had done promotions involving the Chicago Bears. He wore it in honor of his grandmother, a Packers fan, who was buried two days before the NFC Championship Game. I'm sure his grandmother would not have wanted him to lose his job over that! What a goof. Do you think he should have been fired? He got another job at a different dealership.

Greyhounds

Over at Snipe Wife I found out the greyhounds actually do shed. I always thought that was one breed that didn't.

Insurance

Over at Eukanuba Reader's Digest, I saw there is pet insurance available with quite a few options. I wouldn't even know which kind to choose!  Personally, I'd rather pay when the need arises. What about you? Do you have pet insurance?  If not, you may want to look into it.

Tweet Chat

I discovered How To Participate In A Twitter Chat with Tweet Chat that is supposed to allow you to have hash marks added automatically to your tweets and give you the ability to block certain people. When I looked into it though, I couldn't figure it out. I think using the hashmarks in regular Twitter works fine for me.

I have pet insurance. There are many companies and many kinds from Cadillac plans to emergency surgery plans. If you have a dog with a serious illness, bills can run into the thousands and the insurance is definitely a comfort for me.

I have a whippet which is like a greyhound and she sheds seasonally but nothing like my long haired dogs.

I learned the hard way about vacuum cleaners :-)

Love your Friday posts!

we dont' have insurance on our pet, but i have thought about it! we have a large breed and should the terrible bloat happen, i will probably cry for not having it.

we gum up our vacuum all the time. with pet hair, dirt, fireplace ash on the marble...anyway, we have to keep up on the care of the thing. hubby actually takes it to be maintananced at sears annually. he's a huge believer in that.

I still believe that I came up with the concept of pet insurance. Many years ago when I was a teenager I thought, "there should be insurance for pets." At the time I had no pets. It's one of those ideas that was bound to happen.

I can't believe you are supposed to clean the filter on your Dirt Devil every time you use it, but you did remind me that I need to clean the filter on our Dyson. I'm supposed to do it every 6 months and I don't think I've done it in over a year. Oops!

The tie guy seems a little goofy. I agree with you that his grandmother would not have wanted him to do that.

My cousins had greyhounds when I was little. I don't remember them shedding specifically, but I do remember that they were very nice and bigger than me! (I was 4, I think)

I haven't tried tweet chat. I use Hootsuite whenever I tweet. All the columns keep me organized...but it doesn't add the hashtag automatically.

I always love reading each week to see what you have learned!

I don't know why, but I love cleaning out the vacuum. I don't like the dust and gunk. I always wear gloves. But I just like cleaning it out.

The boss asked him to remove the tie five times in 30 minutes? Yes he should have been fired. I would have fired him too. Just saying.

Have a terrific day. :)

Being fired over a tie is crazy! I think I just rebel at being told what someone can or can't wear - within reason of course. If he wore a jersey it'd be different.

We had pet insurance once a long time ago and at that time everything seemed to be "pre-exisiting" so they wouldn't cover much. I think it's much better these days so I should look into it again.

I think if the job was doing a Bear's promotion, the tie wasn't appropriate, but I think I would have sent him home with no pay--not fire the dude. Sounds like there were other issues with him.

I don't have pet insurance, but I do have credit with CareCredit which can be used for vet bills. When Colin had his wisdom teeth out this past summer, the oral surgeon wanted $1200 up front for his portion of the bill. Yeah/no. So they offered me a CareCredit application. It can be used for medical and dental bills, as well as vet bills. You have to work out the percentage with each doctor, but we got no interest for 12 mos with the oral surgeon. Can't beat that if you have a large medical bill!

being fired over a tie trying to honor a loved one who reciently passed away, what a petty S.O.B.

Sometimes I wonder if all of those filters are really worth all the fuss - You need to have a schedule taped to the machine just to make it through the year haha!

I could understand if the guy had been having trouble with the dress code several times, but a one day thing I don't think is worth getting fired for - it's not like he came in wearing flip flops and worked with a chain saw.
