Sunday Sharing: Helping Others

I finished reading the book of Galatians this week so will choose a highlight from there since it's such a short book. The verse for this week is Galatians 6:9-10 which says:

Don't get tired of helping others. You will be rewarded when the time is right if you don't give up. We should help people whenever we can, especially if they are followers of the Lord.
(Contemporary English Version)

I generally like to help others and believe most people do.  It gives me a good feeling if I can help someone and I also am grateful when someone helps me.  This is one of the reasons that I enjoy being a secretary/administrative assistant which is basically just helping others.  It's a good job for me.  Beyond that though, it's fun to surprise people by doing something nice for them.

One day last week, I witnessed one of the beggars downtown who asks people for money every day, ask a lady that was passing by behind me.  I heard her say she didn't have any money, but she could give him her lunch (which she had just purchased) saying it was a burger.  He gratefully accepted it and she gave it to him!

It made me realize I have a ways to go in this area.  I'm fine with buying people gifts, going out of my way to help someone with something, giving time to help with church events, help my husband with things, but don't see me ready to give up my own lunch for someone else that I don't even know.  I thought that was very nice of her!

When was the last time you saw someone help someone else.  How are you doing at helping others?

I am trying to help a lady who rides one of our buses to church. She has several problems and has chosen to share them with me. I listen and when we part I give her a hug and tell her, "one day at a time". She has come back for every service. It is a blessing to help others.

I live in California. There's a beggar on almost every corner. I give them nothing. I do see someone give them money now and then.

I give to those I wish to give to, like one particular animal blogger. I like making sure she has some extra money to feed all her babies. I have my charities that are well chosen. I'm supporting my son right now so he doesn't lose his apartment. I help a lot, just where I want to not where someone else thinks I should.

Have a terrific day. ☺

I don't give a lot to people on the street. It's hard to know when they really need the help and when they don't. But I have paid for a meal more than once for someone who asked. I'd rather give them a meal than just a bit of money. Right or wrong, that's how I feel.

I've also paid for the car behind me in a drive thru. You never know when that will make someone's day! I've had it happen to me a couple times and decided I'd like to pay it forward. It's actually really fun! :)

My human has given food she bought to homeless folks who were begging. In fact, she worries that if she gives money to many of these people, they will spend the money on drugs, so she prefers to give them something to eat instead of cash. That way she feels she is helping (they are almost always hungry) without doing harm.

I love this post, Karen. I give when I can. I always liked helping a few of my mom's friends at her nursing home. Before mom passed, I would take her a cup of her favorite coffee and also a cup for a friend of hers. I'd spend a little time talking with the friend because she didn't get any visitors. I also made some 500 cookies for everyone at the home last Christmas. For a time, I used to deliver Meals on Wheels, which is great if you can swing the time (you have to do it mid-day, which became difficult with my work schedule). Anyway, it's a wonderful contribution, because you're not only delivering food, you'd delivering time and a listening ear for people who never see anyone else during the day. When I retire, I plan to do that again. I loved it!

When I think about it, I try to keep a sack lunches in my car. I'll put some non-perishable things in it, and a bottle of water. {and even a small baggie of dog food} and when I see people on the side of the road I have something to give them because I don't often carry cash.

what a great post! and a good reminder that we need to be on the look-out to help others.
