Things We Learned This Week 43 of 2011 (encylopedias, doctor, alarm)

Encyclopedias

When tutoring, we were surprised to find out that the third graders didn't know what an encyclopedia was. With the Internet, Google and Wikipedia, guess encyclopedias are pretty much a thing of the past. I have a set though!

Doctor News

My bone density test showed I have Osteoporosis in my legs and hips. Oh well. So much for the bone medicine I'm taking! The good news is though that my surgeon said I can play volleyball if I want.

Alarm

I thought I finally found out why my cell phone alarm hasn't been working to wake us up in the morning (I think). It was on snooze. Don't know how that happened!  Took it off snooze but it STILL didn't work!  Wonder what's going on with this.  I'm glad that's my biggest problem right now!  Life is good.  UPDATED 10/29/11:  I finally called customer care and it turns out somehow my phone was on vibrate.  I reset it to tone and now my alarm worked--yea!  I must have put it on vibrate and forgot to turn it back.  No wonder I didn't hear my phone ring when Gerard called!

We are giving away an audio book ("The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta) at Grab A Book From Our Stack.

Isn't that funny that kids don't use encyclopedias anymore? I guess that is good because they get outdated the minute they are printed. Amazing what they don't have a clue about, isn't it? My kids are always amazed when we tell them that we used to have to get up to change the channel on the TV.

I would think that exercise is the BEST thing for your bones. Keep working out, Karen! :)

I used to browse through encyclopedias ALL the time as a kid. I was a very curious person. I own two sets. I won't let my children go through the more modern set (from the late 1980s) because they contain many images of nude people. Even Wikipedia has nudity, so I monitor their Internet activities very closely.

That's awful about your bone density! It's especially weird that even though your regimen is physician-guided with medicines, you still have osteoporosis. I have been reading a book- maybe you will like it. It's Dr. Don Colbert's "Seven Pillars of Health." He is a Christian doctor and a lot of his book is about seeking natural methods for ailments and for building good health. The book is a real eye-opener and very readable. You might like it!

Thanks for "liking" my Across the Interwebs post at Freaky Frugalite. :)

When I was a kid, we had a set of Encyclopedias and I used to just sit there and read them for fun. I especially loved looking at all the photos of the different dog breeds in the dog section. It's so strange kids don't even know what they are anymore.

Sorry to hear about your bones, hope that you guys come up with a good treatment plan!

My Mommeh had a set of Encyclopedias, and she especially loved her set of books about animals with lots of beautiful photos. She remembers when she first got a computer and wondered what in the heck to use it for!

I used to enjoy looking through encylopedias! It's funny kids these days will never know about them. Glad you can still play volleyball!
