6 Things We Learned This Week 14 of 2011 (charities, animals, Chinese, exercise, Autism, exercise)

Comment For Charity

I am so encouraged to see another blogger, Beth Ann at It's Just Life, start donating to charity for comments left on her blog too! This month being Parkinson's Awareness month, she will be donating 50 cents to The National Parkinson’s Foundation for each legitimate comment on her blog. I am starting a blog roll in my right sidebar for blogs I discover that are doing this. Wouldn't it be great if more would join in? I you decide to do this, please let me know! I'd love to add your blog to the list and comment regularly.

Smart Birds

Over at Everyday Adventurer I learned that that crows are now believed by many scientists to possibly be the second most intelligent creatures on the planet? They're only behind humans. That's right. Not even chimps or dolphins are as intelligent as these birds. Ratty even got a great picture of a crow flying which is hard to do!

Disguised Piglets

A mother tiger was depressed because her triplet tiger cubs died, so veterinarians found some piglets, wrapped them in tiger skins and laid them by the mother tiger to took care of them. Cute pictures of this are at Michelle's Menagerie: Oh No, It's Monday! Can You Pass This Week's Grump Test?

Chinese Confinement Rule

When visiting some of Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop participants, over at Mama Wants This I learned about a rule I never heard of: the Chinese Confinement Rule. New mothers are supposed to stay in the house for 30 days, eat only certain foods, and not shower or wash your hair (I'm assuming this is for the 30-day period). She wrote about breaking this rule--no wonder!

Autism Awareness Month

I came across a couple posts this week letting me know that April is Autism Awareness Month: "All Things Work Together For Good" and Autism's Angels.
We’ve read several books dealing with Autism that you might also enjoy. I found a mother at The Ratio of Failures that writes about Autism from first hand experience with her boy. Hope you will pay her a visit and read some of these posts. "Parenthood" is a very good show about everyday life of The Braverman family and the families of their grown children, one of which has a child with Autism.

Exercise and Mind

At Can Your Workout Make You Smarter? I read that "regular exercise may improve your memory and ability to learn." Definitely a good reason to exercise regularly!

Click this link to find more Friday Fragments or link up your own!  We did some at "Grab A Book From Our Stack" this week too!

i have heard about exercising your mind, and i should probably engage in that more actively.

woohoo for plugging autism month, i had no idea it was also parkinsen's month. april is busy!!

even if they are smart, i don't like crows :-( growing up in the midwest and watching them scrounge probably broke me.

I'm not surprised that crows are considered so intelligent. I rather like them, except during August when they perch in the tree outside my bedroom window and communicate loudly with their peers.

I think I'll join the comment challenge and contribute the money to Heifer International. (I may need your help setting it up.)

Hm, if crows were REALLY smart, they'd leave my yard. They scare off all the songbirds! One of these days, I'm going to pound them. Ugh. lol

Tettelestal:
Physical exercise helps your mind. April is also Greyhound month too! I just found that out today. I haven't had any experience with crows so they don't bother me.

Ann in The Up:
No problem setting this up. All you do is decide how much you will donate per comment, announce it on your blog so people know about it and then at the end of the month, count up the comments and donate whatever amount you decided on per comment. I'm google Heifer International--I wonder what they do.

Rebecca:
Maybe if you got an ugly mask and wore it outside in the yard like the researchers did on that video, they would leave!

Adrienne:
Thanks for your kind words and definitely check out the Chinese rule post--it's crazy!

Beaded Tail:
Glad you liked this post. When I first saw that picture, I didn't realize they were piglets!

I love the comments for charity idea. I'll have to tuck that one away in my memory bank.
