7 Things We Learned This Week 9 of 2011 (vets, dogs, poll, comments, food, trick)

Cool Trick

Over at Freaky Frugalite I saw this very cool video demonstrating how to suspend water without a cup. If anyone can figure out the trick to this, I would LOVE to know! It's really worth watching!

Comments

We had 224 comments for February so donated $112 to The National Children's Cancer Society. This is $112 more than they would otherwise have. My blogging buddy over at Red Pine Mountain is donating per comment to The Wounded Warrier Project. This is a new charity to me. Fee free to join us in promoting charities this way and giving them more than they normally would have received otherwise.

Exercise Poll

We had 38 respond and discovered that 36% (the highest percentage for an answer) don't exercise, but 34% (a close second) do walk their dog. Only 9 (23%) of the 38 actually workout at a gym. I'm thankful I can workout again and It Feels Great To See Progress.

Veterans

Now we can help homeless veterans just by clicking at Give Meals For Homeless and Hungry Veterans. It says 1.5 million veterans are at risk of homelessness!

Food

Gerard tried oatmeal with Smucker's sugarless strawberry jam on top and likes it! He saw the tip in FITNESS magazine and told me he was glad I got it or he would never have known about this!

We spent around $550 on pizza last year!

Dogs

The Russian Wolfhound is also called a Borzoi. It's a big, beautiful long haired dog.

Seniors and Strength

I'm currently reading Strength Training for Seniors by Michael Fekete and learned that strength training is of primary importance for seniors because strength has such an important effect on the other aspects of fitness. Cardiovascular capacity is limited because it is genetically determined. However, muscle strength and muscle endurance can be dramatically improved through exercise.

Please leave a comment to help Canine Lifeline, our charity for this month! Maybe you could share with us something you learned this week.

The new oatmeal cup at McDonald's is pretty good, too!

I LOVE oatmeal! I like using Vanilla soy milk on mine---YUM!

I like to walk or ride my bike in the warmer weather because I don't like the gym. Although I am not a germaphobe, I find that I am at the gym and people there kind of gross me out. I can't even get into the pool at the gym, which is sad because I love to swim and would like to do that again--I was on the team in high school.

Isn't that weird??? I think the gym is really germy!

I haven't heard of putting jam in oatmeal but it does sound good. I like to put almonds, craisins and grapenuts in mine. Mmmm mmm good!

$550 on Pizza last year. Wow. Ever since we moved to jacksonville, FL where we have yet to find a really great pizza place, we have hardly eaten any pizza. Maybe $30? I'm sure our $550 goes to Chinese food instead lol

I LOVE Russian Wolf Hounds. So beautiful!

I have been thinking lately I need to eat more oatmeal. I like it with a little milk and butter and brown sugar. I bet honey would be good too.

I love oatmeal and, like @Lin, use vanilla soy milk on mine with a 1/2 banana! I really enjoy reading your Friday Fragments post. I hope you have a great day.

Wow! what a neat blog. I am glad you came by Steadfast. I'll be back to see what else you are up to. I walk my dog and currently do the morning mile on the island every day with the pooch. Had no idea about the number of homeless veterans! So many got messed up in Nam and are paying the price even now. Rosemary

I love the oatmeal idea! I will have to try that.

Count me in the 36%

I think the water "trick" is actually a hoax--I just can't believe it! :)

Thanks for commenting everyone!

Daisy: Gerard says "Why would anyone want to buy oatmeal from McDonalds when you could get a whole box of it at the grocery store for what they charge?"

Ann: Glad you liked my info on strength training. I'll soon be doing a book review on this over at our book blog.

Lin: That is sad you don't swim anymore. I agree the gym if germy, but that's what purell hand sanitizer is for. Some gyms even have it available right at the gym! Walking and bike riding is good exercise, but you really should consider doing some strength training as well.

Beaded Tail: I like raisins in my oatmeal and peanut butter is good too! It seems everyone agrees it needs something added to help the blah taste!

Kristin: I guess Florida is not all that great a place to live after all if you can't even find a good pizza place. Maybe you should move. We spend zero on Chinese food.

Rachael: That dog is really cool looking. Oh yeah, I like brown sugar too but I am trying to cut down on my sugar intake these days.

Shawn: I have eaten bananas on cereal but never on oatmeal. Gerard says he wouldn't want to bother with cutting up the banana and he doesn't like the idea of milk on oatmeal.

Steadfast Ahoy: Thanks for visiting our blog. Hope you will check out our other ones too! I forgot to mention that I really like your blog header! The homeless veterans was a shock to me too!

Mrs 4444: I like peanut butter in my oatmeal too! I haven't tried the jam yet on it but Gerard really likes it!
