An Interesting Classmate (Writer’s Workshop)

Why was Tarin K., My Kindergarten Friend, So Special? First off, he was nice to me and helped me with a worksheet. I don’t remember too many classmates, but I remember Tarin because I really liked him. (I thought Tarin & Karen had a pretty nice ring to it.) He lived down the street from me on the other side and we used to play with trains and army men together. (Yes, I was a tomboy.)

Second, I remember one day he sang “The Battle Hymn Of The Republic” in school as a solo one day. I was so impressed and never forgot it. Every time I hear that song, I think of Tarin and wonder if he remembers me. I even remember his LAST name! If you happen to read this, Tarin, I’d love to hear what you are doing now.

Do you remember a unique classmate?  What was so unique about them?

This is part of Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop in response to the prompt: “What made them so interesting? Remember a unique classmate from your past? Write about him/her” which was inspired by writingfix.com.

"I even remember his last name!" What is it about grade school kids that we remember their first AND last name all the time?! Is it the daily roll call that is drilled into our memories--or that we just sat with them so much of our youth? I can pull out class pictures from K-5 and tell you every single person's name--first and last. But don't ask me to name the girl in the next office.

Interesting. There's a lot of mates I remember, and some even their last names. Does that mean I have more fond memories of them then the ones whose last name I don't recall?

I would imagine that Tarin remembers you too! I remember a few classmates and one in particular who I had a crush on in 1st grade. I happened to see his sister when I was in Kansas last month and I wondered if she told him and if he remembered me too! Hope so!

Lin's comment is funny and so true! I can name them all.... but who's that person down the street again?

That's great that you had such a good friend in school. :)

I remember Marc Throop in 5th grade. He was so tall and one day he started crying due to some stress that had happened. I remember our teacher, Mr. Apple, talking to us about it. He said that it was hard for Marc because we expected more from him since he was so tall for his age. It seemed like he should be older and wiser based on his size. Marc and Mr. Apple stuck with me over the years.

It is so funny to me because I was just wondering the other day about how I can remember everyone from grade school but I can't remember my next door neighbors first name.

I had a friend in school that I remember too. She was the first person to speak to me when I moved to a new school. She became my best friend and 12 years later we are still very close.
