7 Things I Learned This Week #95 (elevators, recipe, food, history, Kindness, Amazon)

Do You Know What Tomorrow Is?

Over at The Prairie Maid I learned from a badge on her sidebar that November 13 is World Kindness Day. This is the fist I've heard about it. We should all be a little kinder than usual!

Elevators

Did you know some elevators don't have any buttons for the floors on the inside? I just came across some like that this week. The buttons for the floors are on the wall next to the elevator on the outside! The security guy asked me if I needed help when he saw me standing there, gawking at it getting ready to take this picture and told me they are common in New York, but were just installed in this building about six months ago.

Sawdust Pie

I just found a recipe for Sawdust Pie at Charm of The Carolines! Never heard of this before but it sure looks good. I think I could even make it except for separating egg whites--don't know how to do that. (The recipe is at the bottom of the post.)

Bread Pudding

Last week when we went out for breakfast to Hometown Buffet, I was disappointed to learn that they didn't have any bread pudding. That's my favorite thing to get there at the breakfast buffet. Apparently, at least the one by us is discontinuing it. Boo hoo.

History--cool site

Over at Comedy Plus this week I found a link to a cool site that tells you what happened the year you were born. All you do is plug in a year and it prints a bunch of things that happened then. It's pretty cool. In 1953, the top selling movie was Peter Pan (my hero--I never wanted to grow up either).

Amazon's Listmania

Amazon deleted all my lists except one because I included "My Funny Dad, Harry" (the book I wrote) in them. It took me 35 minutes this morning to re-create just one of them! ARRGH! Why couldn't they have just told me? Why couldn't they have just removed my book? I will be doing a post about this a some point.  (I was just following the advice I read in Sell Your Book On Amazon by Brent Sampson.)

Bulldogs

Yesterday one of my attorneys shared that he took his dog to the vet for surgery. It has skin cancer that keeps returning. He said bulldogs are prone to skin cancer. Very sad the dog and his family.

My Mommeh thinks bread pudding is delicious, too. Yummy and comforting!

You always learn so very much every week. That's a wonderful thing.

Have a terrific day and weekend ahead. :)

Good morning, Karen!

Thanks for the link.

Yes, you can separate egg whites. It's easy peasy (as mrs4444 would say). It just takes a little practice or you could buy a separator.

Thanks for the tip about birthdays and what happened. I'll have to check that out.

I think some are boycotting Amazon for other reasons......:(

Sorry, to hear about the dog with skin cancer. That's sad.

I like bread pudding along with egg custard pie. They were my dad's favorite. Dh will eat them, but the boys don't like the texture....or maybe it is just because it isn't chocolate!!! ;)

Hope you and Gerard have a wonderful weekend!

Blessings,
Cheryl

I've never seen an elevator with the buttons on the outside either... seems slightly odd to me!

I just use my hands to separate eggs. This video shows how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kqx9uLEDM0&feature=player_embedded

Oh I'd be frustrated about the Amazon lists too! It seems like they could send a courtesy e-mail first before deleting it!

I separate and egg by just moving the yolk from one half of the shell to the other. I do this over a small empty bowl. That way if you get shell or egg yolk in the white, you can fish it out without ruining the complete recipe.

I don't know about the Amazon list thing - but I hate having to remake something that wasn't my doing! ugh.

I better get all the mean out of my system today so I can get my kind on tomorrow.

You were born in a good year. I was born at the height of the counter-cultural revolution (late 60s). Not the best of times for our country. Probably the worst, lol.

Separating eggs is not difficult, but a little messy. Be brave! Give it a try! :D

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment everyone!

Sandee: It seems like I do. There's so much I don't know yet, I should be learning all the time!

Prairie Maid: Oh, I like custard pie too. It's been SO long since I had it, I forgot all about it. My mom used to make them on holidays. I think a lot of people have some problems with Amazon. They certainly do have a lot of products though.

Mub: That's the only building I've seen buttons on the outside of an elevator.

Kirby: I think that process for separating the egg whites sounds easy enough--I probably could do it!

Unknown Mami: Glad you plan to be kind tomorow!

That elevator is pretty odd. What keeps someone from punching all the buttons once you get in and can't see where you're going anymore? I guess I just don't understand the concept.

Bread pudding is one of the main reasons I like buffets so it's terrible they are discontuining it.

Bread pudding is delicious. My mother in law makes it and so does my hubby sometimes. I tried my hand at it a few times but it didn't come out as good as theirs.

I saw a Nova program on PBS last week, all about elevators. Apparently the Marriott in NYC figured out the fastest way for passengers to get to their respective floors is to let them punch in their desired floor number outside the elevator. A digital readout above the keypad tells them what number elevator to go to (and also shows an arrow pointing in the correct direction). They are programmed to figure out which elevator is closest and already on the way to the vicinity of your floor. They say it gets people where they're going about 50% faster than if they entered their floor number after getting in the car.

Also learned that an elevator car can never crash to the bottom floor in a free fall because the brakes will always engage if a free all is sensed, and the engagement mechanism does not rely on electricity, so even in a power outage, you are safe.

If you can stand more elevator trivia, one service worker said the "close doors" button in most elevators is only there for show, to make people feel they have a sense of control. I forget why they said they don't want passengers to be able to close the doors faster.

I found an egg separating video on YouTube, so you can see exactly how it's done (actually there were a few but this one is under a minute and nicely filmed):
