I Can't Believe I Did That--Thank God For Night Secretaries!

I really need to get more sleep but there just isn’t enough hours in the day to do all I want to do after work such as spending two to three hours reading and commenting on blogs in addition to tweaking my own and posting, checking out Facebook and Twitter, and watching a TV show. Oh, and let’s not forget supper and cleaning the litter boxes!

If you know me or have been reading this blog for some time, you know I do some pretty stupid things sometimes, but nothing serious. But a week ago I got a “wake-up” call when on my way home from the bus stop at 6:00 p.m., I realized I sent a court filing via UPS to the wrong place! I even specifically looked at the label before I put it into the mail slot and it didn’t register that I had it wrong. How could I be so stupid? YIKES!!!

I kept saying, “This is awful!”

“How could I have done that?”

“I have to call [to let the attorney know}, I hope she is still there.” (She was there and was very nice about it.)

“I can’t believe I did that!”

“I could lose my job over this!”

Fortunately, we have night secretaries that I called who said, "The UPS stuff is still sitting in the hall." I was SO relieved to hear that! One of them hunted down my erroneously addressed UPS envelope, canceled out the old label and created a new one with the correct address. The only logical explanation for this that I could think of was lack of sleep. I really am NOT an air head!

Thank God I thought of it soon enough to get it fixed before it actually got sent! I do not normally give work a second thought once I’m out so can only attribute this to God watching out for me. I was literally only five or six houses away from home when I finally realized what I did. Thank God for night secretaries! I wonder how many other crises they prevent from actually happening.

I am definitely getting to bed before 9:30 p.m. on work nights—no more excuses for me! I aim for 9:00 to make it by 9:30 p.m. So, to all my Facebook friends, please, please, please if you see I’m on there past 9 p.m., send me to bed! Does anyone else have a close call to share? Has a night shift crew ever helped you out? Do you see God involved in your everyday life?

(I debated if I wanted to share my stupidity with the world, especially since it was at work, but think it may help warn others to get enough sleep and no harm actually occurred.)

Ah, do not worry, everybuddy makes mistakes sometimes. But I'm glad you are getting good sleep now.

Karen, you are being wayyyy too hard on yourself. We all make mistakes! But fortunately, you caught yours just in time! No worries--don't beat yourself up.

Karen, all's well that ends well! :) Don't be so hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes, and everything turned out OK. I wish I had a night secretary! You sound like your job and co-workers are a terrific blessing!

I have missed your visits and comments to my blogs, but I certainly understand that you need more sleep. Take it easy!

You were lucky on this one and yes getting enough sleep will help this kind of thing from happening again. As for all the stupid stuff I've done? I could write a book.

Have a terrific day. :)

I've made plenty of mistakes and like you, sometimes it'll pop in my head later what I did and hopefully I have time to fix it. Thankfully you realized it and the night secretaries were able to fix it in time so alls well that ends well! Hope you get more sleep though!

Oh, I think something like this happens to everybody. I'll have to talk it over with my dad so I can give you an example from my life..I just can't think of any right at THIS moment...but I know I've had them!!!! Praise the Lord for night secretaries!!! Yeah, sleep is very important...and at least on my part, don't worry about responding to blogs etc right away...you have a life and that has to come first...and set aside designated time to check up on people...or maybe just picks a select number of blogs to check on each day...like three or four..

Oh I just thought of something..when I was working at a university bookstore..at the end of the day, we put the money in the bags and deliver it to the back counter..to go to accounting..well, this one night I was so tired, I actually started to walk towards the backroom backdoor with the money in hand. One of the security guards stopped me...I felt so bad..He knew and I knew that I was tired...but it was embarassing. He said that many others have done that too!!!! so we did have a good laugh over it. NEVER did it again though...boy, that was embarassing.

Thanks for this post :) :) :)

Love and hugs, Heather :)

The good news is that you caught your mistake in time and I'm with you in thinking that it was God who reminded you. There are many times when a random thought just pops into my mind and solves a problem I'm trying to solve. For example, when I was installing our attic fan last year, I went to finally turn it on and it wouldn't work. I went back and checked all my wiring and sure enough, there was power getting to it, but it still wouldn't. Well, I gave up for the day and asked God for help. Well, a little while later, an idea popped into my head to check the fan blades to make sure there was nothing obstructing them. Sure enough, when I turned them, there was a screw sticking out that totally stopped the fan from spinning. I fixed that and out of nowhere an idea came to me to set the thermostat to the highest setting and then re-set it to the desired temperature. I then had my wife hit the switch and the fan worked fine. I really believe that God was involved in all of this, because if the fan would have worked from the start, that screw would have burned out the motor and I would be out $75.
I know it's a small thing, but I believe that God helps us in all things, not just the big stuff.

Daisy: Yes, at least I am sleeping more now.

Lin: That would have been really terrible though if I hadn't caught it.

Rebecca: You're right, all is well that ends well. Good thing my mistakes aren't in a life and death situation! Most secretarial mistakes can be corrected.

I just haven't been visiting as many blogs--just not enough hours in the day to do all I'd like. Sometimes though, I stop by but don't comment. Glad you got your wiring done.

Sandee: Thanks, be sure to let me know what you book comes out!

Beaded Tail: Yes, all is well that ends well. Thankfully I slept well that night knowing it was caught in time.

Heather: Thanks for understanding and sharing your big goof embarrassing mistake. I try to at least get through the updates in my blogroll Monday-Friday and visit those who comment here too.

Tahtimbo: That is very cool how God helped you fix the fan. Thanks for sharing about it here!

I can really relate to that and I know how awful it would be to send a court filing to the wrong place after having been a paralegal for so many years. I found I always had to keep on checking myself and sometimes when we got into a crunch and were pushing out stacks of filings, it was really difficult. My heart goes out to you for the panic you must have felt. I'm glad everything worked out for you.
P.S. - all of us make mistakes and I found my bosses to be very forgiving and I bet yours would have been too because you are such a great employee.
