The Hardest Puzzle We Ever Did--The Castle

My mom loved puzzles and I remember working on several with her. Not that I was much help although she was very patient and I did get better at doing them. I remember several very hard ones: the huge swan puzzle with mostly green pieces, a farmland puzzle with mostly blue and brown pieces and a very pretty bird puzzle that I bought for her. It had several colorful parrots and a cockatoo in it. The hardest one though was the 3-D castle.

This is a picture of the only 3-D puzzle we ever did. I didn’t think we’d ever get it done but my mom was determined not to let it beat her. Notice, all but a few of the pieces were gray and white. I’ve always liked castles ever since 4th grade when we had a unit on Medieval times with castles, knights and family crests on shield so that’s what kept me going—the fact that it was a castle. When we finally finished this puzzle, we felt that we really accomplished something. Neither one of us wanted to take it apart so I kept it together and very carefully moved it upstairs to a spot on my window seat in the dining room.

It spent several years there but finally when I was cleaning out dad’s house after he died, I threw it out. I knew we didn’t have a good place for it in our house and it was pretty unstable so probably wouldn’t have made the move well anyway. I’m glad I got a picture of it though. It was the coolest puzzle I ever did.

Do you like puzzles? If you want a real challenge, find a 3-D one to do. What was one of your great accomplishments?

I've seen those puzzles, but have never been brave enough to give them a try. Probably, because I have a hard enough time with the 2 dimensional ones :)

That's quite a puzzle! It's good you have a photo of it and such fond memories of putting it together with your mom!

I like to do puzzles--especially on winter weekends. I have one that is all chocolate, so the pieces are all brown--just various shades of it. Ugh! It's tough. Can't even imagine the 3D castle!! WOW!

Oh my goodness! I can't imagine the patience it must have taken doing a 3D puzzle. I don't think I better try one.

Wow, that's an amazing accomplishment to do that puzzle. I also love puzzles but I haven't done one in many years. I think you have inspired me to go find one and try it.

I also love castles. I always hoped I grow up to live in one but now that I'm old, I couldn't imagine having to clean all that space :-)

Thanks for a most enjoyable post.
