Guiding Light Is Going Off--Not Surprised

Guiding Light is the one soap opera that I was hooked on and watched daily with my mom during supper and even taped after I was married to watch when I got home from work. It started on radio first in 1937 and then moved to TV in 1952, a year before I was born! It's no wonder they ran out of good story lines. The show always had crazy story lines and that's why I liked it, because it was pretty far from reality and just plain entertaining.

Some of the story lines I liked best were Reva's (I think it was Reva) split personality, Annie Dutton, Roger Thorpe and Dinah, Roger Thorpe and Alan outdoing each other as who could be the worst villain, Danny and the mob before he married Michelle, Frank and Alaini, Buzz marrying the jewel thief, Lizzie with little dog, India and Philip, Harley before she got married and then the romance with her and Gus, Mindy Lewis, Jonathan and Reva scenes, Alan Michael and Harley and Spaulding vs. Lewis.

I quit watching because the story lines got to be so bad and they changed the personality of some of the characters I liked such as Harley Cooper, Gus, and Blake. When they made Josh Lewis a minister, that was the final straw for me. I just couldn't stomach it. Plus the fact that we got a computer and I only had evenings and early mornings to be on it, I'd rather give up the 45 min. it took to watch the show and spend that time on the computer instead. The final episode on CBS is scheduled to air September 18. I might just start watching again in September just to see how they end it.

What do you think of soap operas? Is there any you are hooked on?

I've been hooked on The Young & the Restless since high school. It's getting rather odd lately too but I still watch it!

Isn't GL the only soap still on the air that started on radio? I grew up watching Days of our Lives and Another World - but they're all too crazy these days!

Thanks for commenting on my son's baptism photos. That was actually a cow trough that my church purchased specially for baptisms since we don't have a baptismal in the building. They've used a nearby creek/swimming hole in the past. My husband was baptized in the Tennessee River. I once saw a baptism in a swimming pool too!

I started watching GL when I was in the military in Germany and AFN showed that one and GH. I didn't like GH but got hooked to GL.

When I got back to the states, a neighbor and I would watch it every day as I got home from work right when it came on. I kept watching for years but as time went on, I had less and less time to watch.

I would watch it on days off, every once in awhile and I agree that some characters whom I liked before were totally different and kind of ruined it for me. Plus, they started being just like every other soap opera. Ugh. I missed their magic.

Agree with you about the Spauldings and that horrid Roger Thorp. I liked Bridget a lot. "Mouse" I loved that jewel thief...man I forget what her name was but I liked her character.

Reva and Josh, of course, Billy, the Bowers...the famous Bower BBQ.

It just doesn't have that same feel to it anymore. I hate to see it go, just wish they could bring back some of that spark they used to have.

Oh well. So long, GL. You were a wonderful addiction when I was younger.

Mike--My mom used to watch "As The World Turns" too.

Beaded Tail--I never watched that one, but I always liked the name of it.

Cindy--Yes, GL is the longest running soap on. I remember when I was a teen, tuning into "Another World" thinking it was some kind of science fiction show--then discovered to my disappointment that it was a soap and never watched it then.

Serenity--Ah, another GL fan! The jewel thief's name was Jenna, I just remembered it when I read your comment. I couldn't think of it earlier either! I liked Bridgett too but forgot about her.

I used to watch "All My Children" when I was in high school and then in college too many years ago to say. I also liked "The Secret Storm" but I never watch them anymore. Not much time for television with this blogging stuff.
